Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

1 Year Old and still only army crawls

Is this normal?
DS didn't roll over until 9 months, started army crawling at 11 months, but turned 1 last week and is still only army crawling.  He can get from army crawling to sitting, but does not pull up to stand or crawl on hands and knees.  Anyone else have a 1 year old still army crawling?

Re: 1 Year Old and still only army crawls

  • My best friend is at her pedi right now actually asking him a sim. question. Her daughter is 18 mo. & isn't walking. She army crawled at 1. normal crawled at 14 mo. pulled up at 16 mo. and now can push her toys but not walk indep. At her 15 mo. check up he told her they would talk about a specialist at the 18 mo so she called me quite nervous this morning but I remember at the 12 and 15 mo. check ups he told her that some babies just take a little bit longer. But if you are concerned give your pedi a call.

  • To me, this seems like a delay but I honestly don't know for certain.  Have you spoken to your pediatrician about this?  What does he/she say?

If it were me, I'd get an evaluation.   While I know some children never crawl, the not pulling up to stand is concerning.  Call your pedi. Get an evaluation.  I'd be proactive with this.

  • We have had an early intervention appointment at 9 months and 10 months.  They didn't seem too concerned since he was making progress. He had his 1 year appt at the pedi and he didn't say anything either. They are  making it seem like it's normal, but I just feel like it may not be! UGH! This is so frustrating to me.
  • My friend had her son evaluated last month. Same situation. Turns out that her son is hyper-flexible and is having a hard time controling his joints which makes it very hard to crawl/stand.

  • My niece is 10 months old and not crawling yet.  They told my SIL this is within range and to not worry.  Normal range for walking is up to 18 months.  If you pedi said your LO is fine, then try not to worry.  My SIL just called me yesterday worried about the same thing.  Mine started crawing at 6 months and walking at 11 months, so she keeps comparing her daughter to mine.
  • I was worried too my DD rolled both ways by three months and then nothing.  She did not crawl normal until almost a year. My friend works for early intervention and confirmed the same thing my pedi said EI referrals, at least where I live, are not made for a child not pulling to a stand or cruising until after 15 months unless the pedi notices something while examining the child.  She suggested that I put something DD wanted out of her reach.  My DD would stand if I stood her at a table but was not pulling up to a stand or cruising.  The putting something out of her reach trick did not work because she would just sit down and then crawl over to the item and then grab at it from her knees.  Then one day she was in the bathroom with me while I was getting ready and she really wanted to see in the bathtub so she pulled up on the tub and stood like she had been doing it for years.  She was around 13 and ? months.  She will be 15 months on the 18th and just stood without assistance this past weekend and so far has only done it once. The normal age for walking is between 9 and 18 months, which is a large age range.  Try not to worry too much and offer your LO opportunities to explore etc.. This past weekend my DD, who does not walk, was able to climb an entire flight of stairs.

I have also heard up to 18 months is normal but if your intuition tells you something isn't right, then ask your pedi. That's what they are there for. If its nothing, then you will have some peace of mind or if there is an issue...you can be proactive and work on a plan of action. Good luck!

  • One of my girls started army crawling at 10 months.  She didn't start "real" crawling until the week before she turned a year old.  She is now 13 months and still doesn't pull to stand.  My pedi said we can talk about it more at her 15 month appt if she's still not pulling to stand.  He said they just want to see her walking by 18 months.  If you LO is making progress, I wouldn't worry too much.  I know plenty of kids who didn't walk until at least 15 months.

  • Katie started crawling on all fours one week after her birthday (she turned 1 in Oct)

Pulled up to stand in Dec...Started cruising along furniture soon after

Pushed her little push-cart toy in Feb.

Took her first steps between my husband and I in March

Started walking on her own in April when she turned 18 months old.

Only within the past 2 weeks has she started favoring walking over crawling.

I was starting to get worried but she eventually did it.

  • I would probably call and get an evaluation for Early Intervention. I am not sure about your area, but I know that where I live he would qualify for PT for not being able to pull up and cruise at a year, and for the army crawling. (I know because my daughter started PT at 10 months for other issues, but she can now pull up, crawl/scoot & cruise).

  • My DS was still army crawling until 14 mo.  At the 12 mo. appt. Dr. said she would give him till 15 mo. but still did hip xrays just to rull out any problem.  He started regular crawling at 14 mo. and can now cruise around furniture and with his walker.  We had his 15 mo. appt last week, and Dr. wasn't worried that he isn't walking yet.  Said that it is a 18 mo. milestone that most kids just reach earler than that.  She is giving him until 18 mo. and then if he isn't walking by then she will make other referrals.  I did talk with a PT around 12 mo, and she gave me great ideas and exercises to get him to get up on all fours, so that was helpful.  Hang in there.  I know how it feels to feel that your child is so far behind everyone else's but sometimes our LO just like to take their time.....!

  • DD did not do any type of crawling until 2 weeks before her first birthday.  She began army crawling, so I asked pedi at her 12 month checkup if he was concerned.  He said that as long as she starts walking before 17 months, she's ok.  For our pedi, 17 months is the key "cutoff" for walking.
  • DD crawled at 13 months and walked at 18. I took her for an EI evaluation, she was a preemie too, and she finally crawled a few days before her appt. DS is one and still doesn't crawl. He scoots around on his bottom using his feet/legs. He rolls around to get where he wants. He can get up on all fours, but still hasn't crawled. He goes from sitting to all fours, but not lying to sitting. I am trying not to worry too. He has his 1 yr appt next week.
