Jealousy issues

My girls have been terrible lately with having jealousy issues. If one is sitting on my lap, the other will come bulldozing in and either hit or try to push the other one off my lap. It seems like they are constantly getting on each other's nerves and are always pushing or hitting one another.

They do this with all of their toys or if they are both standing in the same area. I have been intervening and making sure the bully isn't hurting the other, but at this point, I never sit down down or get anything else done.

So MOMs of toddlers, should I keep intervening or should I let them work it out? Please tell me they get better soon!

Re: Jealousy issues

  • My boys do this whenever they are close, although they aren't walking or crawling.  For now I keep them apart most of the day to give them "space"... they seem to only really enjoy each other from a distance.

  • This is a hard one for me too. I'm not always there to intervene, but I also want to teach them right from wrong. I tell them to share, and to take turns, but there is always someone crying. I don't have an answer, just wanted to sympathize.

  • I let them work it out. I only intervene if someone is getting hurt. They will have to deal with each other their entire childhood, so learning to work it out early is important.

  • roman is SUPER jealous, you'd think he was an only child.  if Aiden is already on my lap and roman comes over pushing him off, etc, i'll tell roman "not nice, be gentle" and move him away from me and just give aiden attention.  if they're playing, they kind of "share" letting the other one touch the toy and take it back, I let them work it out unless one is about to bit the other.

  • I let them work it out.  Somewhere around age 2 they started understanding taking turns and sharing which makes it easier, but this will go on for years!
