Preemies

Homecoming tomorrow!

Hello Preemie-Bumpies! I just had to share my joy because it's a joy few others can really appreciate. Tristan is coming home tomorrow! We have our monitor training at 1 p.m., CPR, and then hopefully his favorite nurse will be discharging us. Well, one of our favorites. There are so many fantastic nurses at HUP!

We just got the nursery corner of our room done last night - I forget how to PIP - hmm. Will try to figure it out afterwards. So many little things in here came from Bumpies, whether it was clothes, accessories, books. It's treasured and adds to his tale. The chair is something I found outside one of Penn's sororities on "clean out day". It is 1970's heavy and I had to lug it several blocks before a wayward punk carried it to my stoop (huzzah!).

Any advice for homecoming? Any if I'd-known-then-what-I-know-now?

Re: Homecoming tomorrow!

  • I'm very happy for you, it's a very special day!

Sorry, I was just scanning the board and saw your "going home" post and remembered.

My DD was  27 week baby, 91 days in NICU and came home on her due date, May 14th

But that was 32 years ago and your post kicked my brain into gear.

No advice, just enjoy her and she will take you from there.  Trust me ;)

  • Oh my goodness, really? :D I love when others tell me about their preemie experiences, so thanks for leaving a note.

They told us to think in terms of his due date, and we did - we're getting him a little early, but not much. He was due 29 May.

It is going to be nerve racking at first.  It is awesome having your baby home but it's a makes you a little nervous when you don't have any nurses with you.

The most important thing is spending time with your baby, the housework, ect. will be there later, I promise!

Take lots of pictures and videos.

Enjoy your time with your little one!  We were SO glad to get Reid home (he was a 24 weeker).  It's an exciting time.

  • Happy homecoming!!!! That is so exciting!

It is the strangest feeling to walk out the door with your baby!  We'd often joke about kidnapping our baby & bringing him home from the NICU. Then when the day actually comes, you feel like they're going to stop you at the door or something!

We noticed that as soon as he was home, he behaved differently than in the NICU!  He was the easiest, quietest, sleepiest baby there.  At home, we'd do everything exactly the same, wrap him up, put him in his bed...and he'd cry.   So be prepared for things to be a  bit different! :)

    Good luck and congrats!!

  • Congratulations!  It's such a great feeling.

My advice would be to use a white noise machine when LO sleeps.  I've heard that NICU babies often have trouble sleeping in their quiet houses, so we've been using a white noise machine since day 1.  Our son is a pretty good sleeper, and I think the white noise helps.

Other than that, just enjoy your baby!  The apnea monitor will get super-annoying at some point, but it's a great security blanket for awhile.

    Congrats again!

Absolutely this!  My boys are still fairly easy going (thank goodness) but they both went through a bit of a transition period when they came home after long stays (67 NICU days and 95 NICU days).  We used to joke that they were waiting for shift change.  We feed on demand so that was a part of the adjustment as well.

Congratulations! Don't feel badly about accepting help when you need it, not only are you adjusting to baby at home but that is also when I started processing what really happened in the NICU.
