question about starting school

Just out of curiosity.  Where you live, what determines what age your child starts kindergarden?  Our system goes by calendar year.  My son startd kindergarden in t2009 because he was born in 2004.  Doesn't matter what month he was born, just the year.  He is 6 1/2 and will be going into grade 2 about a month after his 7th birthday.  But I have seen some people on this board, and school aged children board mention their 6 year olds just starting kindergarden.

    This.

I grew up in NYC where the cutoff is still Dec. 31st - calendar year.

  • They have to be 5 years old by Sep 1 to start kindergarten.  DD's birthday is Sep 23 so she just misses the cutoff.  I hate it.  Private schools have a later cutoff and I'm considering putting her in private school for kinder and first grade just so she can start.  Then transfer her to public in 2nd grade.  We'll see.

You must be 5 by Sept. 1st-no exceptions.
  • School here starts at the end of August/beginning of September so you have to be 5 by Dec 1st to start Kindergarten.  So if you have a late birthday you will be starting Kinder at age 4.

  • here in AL it is Sep 1. DS bday is 8-24 so we get to choose wether or not to start him at 4 turning 5 or 5 turning 6. We are just going to see where he is at when the time comes.

  • our cutoff is sept 1st. so at 11pm on 8-31 when I was in labor with lily, the doc (who's wife was a teacher) said "we gotta get this baby out by midnight! or you'll have to wait an extra year for school"

I imagine he had spoken to his wife many times through the 21 hours he was waiting for me to deliver - lol

    This.

My bday is September 4th and I was supposed to start K the year they changed the cut-off from December 1st to September 1st.  I missed it by 4 days and they would not let me in.  My parents even changed my birthday on my birth certificate (yeah, I know, bad, but they knew I was ready for kindergarten)in hopes that I would be let in, but I wasn't. A couple years later the school wanted me to skip a grade.  They actually apologized to my mom for not letting me in the year before, but she said that I had to stick with my grade now.

My brother was born on September 11, five years later.  My parents had no problem starting him when he was supposed to.  It differs for every child.  Some are ready early and some aren't.  "Holding him back" was good for him, whereas, "holding me back" wasn't the best decision.

My sons' birthdays are Nov and December so they will be the oldest in class by entering K when they are a few months away from they're 6th birthdays since our cut off is Sept 1. I am not "Holding them back" just going by the rules.
  • State of California cut off is age 5 by December 2nd; however, they are backing that up to age 5 by September 1st over the next 3 years.
