? about supplementing with formula

We are going to Mexico at the  end of June for 4 nights. My mom and dad are coming down to watch C.  I have about 18 bottles worth of milk they can use in the freezer right now. I'm also going to add in a pumping session each night  from not till then before I go to bed.

My question is if I don't have enough milk to last all 5 days we are gone what is a good formula to supplement with for a bf kiddo? Should I try and give her some before we go to make sure she takes it?  She will be on solids by then as well if that helps.

Re: ? about supplementing with formula

  • We did this. I was going away for a girls' weekend and wasn't able to build up much of a stash. A couple friends suggested that the liquid formula tends to taste better to BF kids, so I bought that. I can tell you, when I paid for it I was very happy to have a BF baby. The only issue with it is it goes bad pretty quickly. I got one of those little hospital single servings from a friend and DH fed Mathis a little of that. He was fine with it and I felt a lot better knowing it was there if he needed it. he ended up not even using it!

  • I bet you could ask your pedi for some samples of the liquid.  We have gotten a TON lately through OB, pedi and random mail deliveries (that I didn't order).  I would offer them to you, but I am saving them in case BF doesn't work out for me.  A few bottles/cans should be enough for you, so I bet your pedi would give them to you.

You can buy single serve cans at Target or grocery store for about $4.  One they are open you have use the entire can in 24 hours.  There are some Similac coupons floating around that make them free.
  • I would try close to the time you go. Some babies care about one brand vs. another. Others don't. And, then, babies sometimes like to change their minds as soon as you figure out what works. ;)

When we supplemented, we didn't use any brand in particular. Although, CostCo was less expensive at that time and we ended up using that most often. (We went through every brand, because we came home with a little of everything.)

Good luck. Have a fun trip.

  • We supplemented with Enfamil at first and it didn't seem to jive well with DD so we switched to Similac Advanced.  SA never upset her tummy and she's gobbled it right up from the very beginning.  I'll warn you - just incase you are ever around for a post-formula diaper, it's a different ballgame as far as the rear end goes. :-)

We use powder and have never noticed an issue...not sure how we'd tell what tastes better to her though?

Definitely definitely definitely get your hands on a coupon before you buy.  It's expensive stuff.  If you go with Similac I know you can sign up for Similac Strong Moms on their website and they'll email you a coupon & have you on their list for future offers.

If it's worse than what she already does I've very very very skeered then. She has MASSIVE poop explosions right now.

  • I started with Enfamil with Cooper.  It made him gassy - not to where he cried, but lord he farted like crazy.  We switched to Similac and then when they had the recall last year we went to the Up & Up brand.  No issues, but Cooper will eat almost anything.

Before we went to NOLA last summer I set my alarm on the weekends to wake up about 2am to pump.  It was just enough to fully stock the freezer.  I didn't do it during the week because of work, though.

Um, it's not the amount. It's the... aroma.

But that ain't nothin' compared to the joy of solids!  Ha!
