Single Parents

Finally!

Got the results of the paternity test yesterday, and they matched up, of course. He IS her father. I got a separate letter yesterday also, saying that our court date has been scheduled for July 11. I was told we would be going through mediation first, so that was unexpected.

Anyway...I am requesting sole physical and legal custody with only supervised visitation. I have some documents such as his parole paperwork, and recent emails where he was talking about being at the bar, hotel parties, doing and selling drugs, etc. I don't have a lawyer, and now I'm starting to get anxious. I have no money to obtain a lawyer, but I'm starting to feel like I need one.

Re: Finally!

  • Congrats on your paternity test results!

I am in PA so I know states are different but when I got my paternity results they scheduled a court date but it wasn't actually court with a judge. It was supposed to be with a magistrate, which is kinda like mediation, to see if we could agree first. Do MO do something like that?

Could you contact legal aid to give you some advice?

  • I'm wondering if it is actually going to be mediation and they just phrased it as a court appearance. I am planning to call them tomorrow to find out for sure. It sucks that I got this news on a Saturday and have to wait to find out what's going on!

  • I'm in MO, too, and my lawyer told me our lawyers might just agree to terms.  If not we go to some kind of mediation-type meeting with a caseworker, and if we still don't agree we go to court.  I'm guessing we will agree fairly quickly since all we're doing is setting up CS and not visitation.

I know you don't have a lawyer, so I'm guessing you might just skip to do the caseworker thing.  Not sure, I'm still early in the process myself, but this is what my lawyer's office indicated if it helps  =0)

  • I called the number on the letter first thing this morning and the lady told me it would just be a quick appearance and the judge will just order us to complete the mediation. I'm definitely feeling relieved, for now.
