constipation

Ok ladies is water the best thing? I have tried prunes once a day and it seems to help a little. So i am doing water & prunes to see if that'll help. They are on mixed grain cereal (only since past week but they've been constipated off & on since i started with rice cereal). I was giving them half rice/half oatmeal because they couldn't handle the oatmeal alone. They were vomiting clear fluid.

Thanks~

Re: constipation

  • Pear juice has worked awesome with mine - about an oz of pear juice a day has made things move much better since starting the rice cereal. I usually mix it in with their formula - and wouldn't you know, that's always the best bottle of the day :) Haha.

  • As pp said, pear juice!!! We did that for our girls when they were younger and it worked wonders! Our pedi actually recommended it so it must work for a lot of people!

  • Hope I dont come across insulting but when my DD was around that age I thought she had constipation and asked her pedi about it. My DD hadnt had a BM in 4 days and I thought it was constipation. Pedi told me unless she is in pain and clearly strenuously pushing when she goes  and constantly has little rocks (sorry if TMI) then it is normal for her not to always go. I thought it should be everyday to every other day..like she was doing b4.

  • Which brand of cereal are you using? Here's why I ask... We have always used Plum Organics brand cereal. 2 weeks ago when I was sick we ran out of it and so I used some Gerber that someone had given us. The boys became constipated, fussy, and started spitting up. Finally after a week and a half it dawned on me that duh, maybe it's the new cereal... So I switched them back and they are back to being super poopers. Maybe it would help your LOs. It's available at Target and BRU.

  • I've noticed that now that we have gotten into more fruits and veggies and less cereal they have been a lot more regular.  Prunes and pears are definitely a help and we stay away from bananas and rice pretty much all together.  They really like the pears or apples pre-mixed with oatmeal.  Maybe they would handle that better?  Good luck!

"P" fruits and veggies can help -pears, plums, prunes, peaches, peas- but stay away from the BRAT diet -bananas, rice, apples, toast.  Pear juice or prune juice helps for some.  (Our pedi suggested 2-3 oz/day.)  You can also try adding a tsp of ground flax seed meal into cereal.  All that said, nothing really helps my DD when she gets constipated so our pedi suggested mixing a tsp of milk of magnesia in her bottle once a day.  That works every time.

  • Mia started having major constipation issues around 5 mos., about a month after starting rice.  I switched to oatmeal, tried prune juice - which would take days to really clear her out.  We started solids a little early and started giving them foods that would help her poop (peaches, pears, prunes, peas)  and still had issues.  At our 6 month appt they gave her lactulose.  It helped for a little, but then continued and they switched to Miralax and that finally did the trick.  She takes it every other day in her morning bottle and that keeps her regular.

We had tried flaxseed and yogurt, both of which are suppose to help and they still have every morning for breakfast too.  She has issues beyond just the rice, which I feel pedi is blowing off to a degree and we have to stay away from bananas and only give them cheese every few days.  I hope that it's just temporary for you because I hate that her diet is restricted and she needs Miralax, early this week she went 2 days without a BM and was in so much pain because we had cheese a couple days in a row.

  • My pedi recommended adding pear juice to the cereal instead of milk/formula.  We also put an oz of prune juice in a bottle if LOs were really constipated.
