How many oz of EBM do you leave for your LO?

So in the next few weeks I'll be going back to work. I was wondering, how many oz's do you leave for your LO while you're at work? On good days, between working and commuting, I'm out of the house for about 11 hours. That said, I haven't really been able to track how much my LO has been eating since I primarily breast feed. We give her expressed bottles every now and then and I have noticed that she can chow down up to 7 oz without a problem at one time. But I don't think that is necessarily how much she eats at one time all the time. I'm just worried I won't leave enough behind to tide her over until I get home to nurse.

One other quick question - do any of you travel and breast feed? Do you know if you can pump and bring BM on the plane? If so, how many oz's of BM can you bring on planes? I can travel anywhere from 1 to 5 days in a week. Or have you found that it's easier to pump and dump while on travel and build up enough of a supply in the freezer at home so that LO gets at least one or two BM feedings and the rest is supplemented with formula until you get home?

TIA!

  • My LO topped out at 5 oz bottles every 3 hours. He's been eating that amount since he was 5 months old, but now he also eats solids. 7 oz is a lot! I'd try 3 or 4 oz and see if that works. Babies will overeat from a bottle.

  • The past two days, LO has eaten 4 3-oz bottles. Our pedi suggested trying to get him to do 3 4-oz bottles instead to stretch out feeding times.

  • I SAH but my LO eats about 5oz (6oz max) from a bottle 2x daily. she can chug that in 7 minutes too. i'd guess added to the other nursing sessions she gets about about 25 oz a day of BM (closer together in the morning and night but a larger gap in the afternoon). Kellymom has a calculator where you divide the number of feeds in a day by the # of oz they should be eating and it will give you an average amount per feed.

7oz does seem like a lot - does all of that stay down? it's possible your LO doesn't need all that but their tummy doesn't register to their brain that they're full before they can suck it all down.

  • I never sent DD with more than 4- 4oz bottles.  Right now DS is taking 3- 3oz bottles from 9am-4pm although we send 4 with him.  Ditto using the kellymom calculator pp suggested.

I would err on the side of sending more smaller bottles, since daycares are limited in how long bottles can stay out and some babies are less happy about taking bottles in a new setting at first.  DD started out with 5 4 oz. bottles and eventually worked up to 4 5.5 oz bottles.

You could try pumping for a day and seeing how much you produce and how much she takes if she's only getting bottles.

  • DS is at daycare from 8:30-5:30 and I send 4 4 oz bottles for him.  Some days he only takes 3 bottles, but that is often the exception rather than the rule.
