I don't have pics on this computer but we did trains for DS's 2nd bday.    I tried to avoid Thomas.   We did have a pin the number on Thomas game and Thomas plates for the cake.

I had a train cupcake pan from Williams and Sonoma.    I made a train track out of black twizzlers and vanilla wafer cookies.   Each kid got a cupcake.   DS got the engine.    I used vanilla cake and then piped in details with red, yellow, and blue icing.   I arranged the train track and cupcakes around a round cake that I iced yellow to make it look like a railroad sign(wrote the RR with black piped icing)

I stuck with using red, yellow, and blue for the decorations.   I made a banner that said happy birthday danny.   Each letter was a little rectangle with the letter on it.   In between each word and at the front and back of the banner was a rectangle with a train pic on it.   I did the banner in red, yellow, and blue.

If you go on etsy and look up train printable party, you might find some people who will make printable party ware.   They send you the PDF file and you print it up yourself.    I did this for his 3rd bday(race car theme) and got a TON of cute stuff.

ETA-here is one I found that looks cute!

I used this etsy seller for my son's 2nd bday party.

Came out FANTASTIC!  I loved all the details and I could use a lot of the "train things" we had for decor and I just stocked up on solid plates at the dollar store.

  • Here was my "practical" mom train birthday party....there was very little planning and 0 online shopping involved!

We had about 20 guests (8 kids.)

Ordered Thomas train cake from closest supermarket the week prior (30ish dollars) It turned out to be really cute and had a little Thomas engine on it.

Stopped by party store after work 3 days before the party and picked up Thomas plate/cups, a table cloth and a banner, which was about $20-30 or so. Also ordered a couple blue balloons and one mylar Thomas balloon. Because they were pricey I only got enough cups/plates for the 8 kids who were coming. Adults got the rest....a mishmash of all the leftover plates/cups from all the other parties we've had! Some from my shower, some from his 1st bday party.

Ordered pizza. Had ice cream. Played outside--no games or bouncy toys or "activities." Honestly I didn't even do party favors. Ha!

It was the easiest, cheapest, and most laid back party and it was fabulous for this busy practical mom : )

  • We just did a traim party this weekend.  Here is a link to the pics...https://mylifeuncorked-sandi.blogspot.com/2011/05/choo-choo-jacks-2.html
