XP: 13 week old rejecting the bottle, going out of town! Help!

DD is 13 weeks old, and has been getting a bottle since about four weeks of age. She breastfeeds whenever I'm around and gets expressed BM when I'm away. She has always taken the bottle well, until the past few days. Now, we believe she may be rejecting it, and from what I read, that isn't unusual at 13 weeks.

She will fuss, and take a little bit out of a bottle, then refuse to drink more. She does this over and over until I get home and then she calms down and nurses like a champ.

My problem is that DH and I will be out of town next weekend and DD will not be going with us. Taking her may be an option, but I'd like it to be a last resort, as we plan to haul some items home with us and need the entirety of our vehicle to do so (so a car seat would hamper this).

What can I do?

  • I'm not sure this will help but, DS was doing that this week too, and the daycare thought he was not getting the milk fast enough from his bottle. So, I changed to medium flow nipples and it has helped. The bad thing is you have to make sure he does not get it too fast or he will get gas and at night I use a slow flow. I use Playtex drop-ins and it says medium flow is for 3 months.

  • That's what we use too (Playtex Drop-Ins)... I hadn't considered that. I am going to buy some tomorrow and see if it helps! She only gets a bottle while I'm at work so it isn't that often anyway, I'm just concerned about next weekend.

  • When I was BFing, this was DS's favorite bottle:

  • OMG!!! DD just started to do this and it is driving me nuts wondering if there is something wrong like gas or if maybe she has an ear infection. I'm tempted to nix all BF until she starts to take the bottle because I am going to be weening her soon anyway.

It makes me worry too! But she still nurses well, and wets/dirties way more than the recommended number of diapers.

I plan to BF until at least 6 months, if not a year+, so I don't have that option!

I have noticed that she eats fine during the day when i nurse her but she is taking less and less on the bottle. She has been having more gas then usual and I need to step the amount of mylecon drops that i am giving her to help her out. She has been using a bottle at least once a day since the first week, but since I am going to be weening and switching to using my freezer stash then she needs to use the bottle.

  • What about the temperature of the milk?  My ds was doing the same thing and then we realized it was too cold.  Now, he takes it like a champ.

  • I'm not sure about temperature... I'm never home when it happens as she does not get a bottle if I can nurse her.

She fussed all night until about midnight last night and finally took the bottle from my MIL (a Playtex). She took another this morning from her (Dr. Browns), and took one tonight easily for my parents (Playtex) as I'm at work again.

She's been in a bad mood and very, very clingy the past few days so I'm wondering if she's been a little under-the-weather on top of it. She never ran a fever (I've checked) but has been fussy and sleepy, and DH has had a cold.
