Babies: 6 - 9 Months

what theory/reason for meats before fruits?

I get the veggies before fruits argument.  I get the low allergen food first argument.  But, why is fruit before meat bad?  LO still doesn't have teeth and is just now doing well with solids.  He is on BM, but I don't really see a reason to do meat besides maybe iron?

I got a passive aggressive comment for letting him eat bananas.

I've never heard that.  My pedi actually said hold off on meat until 9 months but I think she meant it for the texture/consistancy.  I probably won't be giving pureed meat.

  • My pedi doesn't recommend meats until 8-9 months. Ry has been on fruits & veggies since 4 months.

  • Never heard that before. Averys pedi said orange veggies first, then green, then fruits. She's been eating fruit for a month now and loves it!

  • We started fruits and veggies almost simultaneously.  I've never heard of no fruits before meats.  We are just now starting meats.

I've never heard of that either and my pedi said nothing but fruits and veggies until 9 months, although I plan to ask her about yogurt at E's appointment next week.

  • Thanks ladies for the validation...I thought maybe I missed some new research or something, bc judgy mcjudgerson likes to act holierthanthou towards me bc I work FT...I'll continue on my merry way with veggies & fruits & some grains.

  • I've never heard of that before. I just fed Grace a banana for breakfast today, why is that bad?

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with bananas.  Everything I've read says they are a good early food.  This same mama thinks corn is OK but not bananas, so I have learned my lesson to just disregard her comments.

  • Maybe bc they think babies won't eat anything but sweet stuff if you introduce fruit first? Meat was a first food way back when. And very few people are allergic to meat, which makes it a good first food. Was it someone who does baby-led weaning?

  • Around here, the recommendation is for an iron source at every meal. So meat or cereal. Then you add on a vit C source, I.e. Fruits and veggies. So it's not so much meat before fruit, just that iron sources are the priority. And since you probably don't eat cereal at every meal, why should your kid? Hence the meat.

  • I did meats first for two reasons. First, it happened to be on my plate and he was clamoring for something to chew so I let him gum a piece of roast chicken breast to death. Chicken is still his favorite food. Second, I push meats over veggies or fruits because of the iron thing. Aiden is still on breast milk only and refuses all forms of baby cereal so meats, cooking food in a cast iron skillet, and trying to serve any high iron veggie or other food is the only way to make sure he gets his RDA.

that being said, ALL babies have a natural inclination to sweet tastes. Breast milk is sweet, formula is sweet, babies are hard wired to like sweet! Yes, they need to be exposed to a wide variety of flavors but as long as you aren't feeding your LO nothing but bananas I'd tell whomever made a snide comment about your child eating them to take the stick out of their ass and go mind their own business.
