Cloth Diapering

Help with diaper rash!

DD seems to have a recurrent diaper rash these days.  We use pre-folds with a break in between with sposies to clear the rash.  It never fails that a day or so after starting CD's again the rash crops back up.  What am I doing wrong?

I currently wash in All Free & Clear and every other wash do a RNG Funk Rock clean.  Could it be the detergent? I bought some of the Bummis fleece liners to try next.  Any other advice?

Thanks! :)

Re: Help with diaper rash!

  • All Free and Clear is not often recommended for cloth diapers.  Detergent build up could cause a rash.  Is it a yeast rash your LO gets or just contact rash?  If it's a yeast rash you need to disenfect the dipes.  If it's just a regular rash I would try stripping your dipes.

Embarrassed How do you know the difference?  We had her 4 month check-up Monday and the ped noticed it, she made the comment that it wasnt yeasty, but to watch it.  In my uneducated opinion, I would call it a contact rash.

I need to start washing with Tide (what I hear recommended the most) its just that we wash our clothes in All and I always forget to pick it up at the store...

  • It depends on what kind of rash it is.

With prefolds, could it be dampness? I'd try some fleece liners to see if that works, as well as a diaper cream.

Otherwise, try stripping. We did get stink issues with All F&C and had to switch. I also had rash issues with RnG (I haven't tried funk Rock) when we used it as the only detergent; I have no issues with it when I use it in my soak cycle.

    We use Tide these days.

We're battling rash after a year+ of no troubles.  We'd been using Planet detergent for the dipes, but a different detergent for our clothes.  It is probably wise to switch over all of your laundry to the detergent you'll use for dipes.  The concern is that if you use a detergent that leaves residues for your clothes, when you wash the dipes with clean rinsing detergent, that detergent first "attacks" the residue in your machine, which means your dipes don't get as clean.

We're trying Country Save powder now, but if this switch doesn't fix our issue I'll try Tide.  Keep in mind that some have said that Tide irritates their baby's skin, so it might not be for everyone.

That was my fear with using Tide.

We did have stink issues with All F&C so I started using the Funk Rock every other wash and now we have no stink, but still a rash issue.  I know the Funk Rock didnt cause the rash because we've been battling the rash since before I used it.  I really think its a dampness issue and plan to use the fleece liners asap and cross my fingers that works.

I think I'll go ahead and strip the diapers too because I havent done that since I bought them.

Any more advice is greatly appreciated!  Thanks!!

  • I use All F/C and haven't had any issues.  I wash every 2 days and once every 2-3 weeks I put a squirt of blue dawn in the wash cycle to strip just in case.

For the occassional rash (DD is teething so she gets a little red and irritated sometimes), I use coconut oil.  It's incredible!  CD safe, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic.  I use it at the first sign of redness and we're clear after a couple of changes.  I always use it at night.  She got a rash a couple weeks ago from her first solids poo and it cleared up after 2 days of coconut oil at every change.  HTH!
