Natural Birth

Bradley without classes? Feedback please?

Has anyone used the bradley method without taking classes? We have some personal reasons for maybe not wanting to use the teachers in our area (that I'd rather not get into here), but I'm worried that we'll be missing something by trying to do it on our own. I have the "Natural Birth the Bradley Way" book and we can order the workbooks and read and practice on our own. Has doing this worked for anyone else?

  • I think the classe help to motivate you to do the hw and relaxtion. if you and DH are very commited you will be able to do it. but the classes definitely push u to do the reading + exersizes.

    good luck

  • I think if you're diligent about reading and practicing, you can easily go without classes. I wanted to skip them, but our birth center basically required it. The classes were helpful for my husband though, I don't think he would have been motivated enough on his own.

I don't know where in Dallas you are, but we took classes with Linda Worzer in Richardson www.naturalbeginningsonline.com . She was great.

I definitely think it's possible if you're both motivated.

  • We didn't take any classes, I can't say we followed the exercises really as much as the concept.  I'm afraid DH wasn't incredibly involved in the preparation part, but I found the book and theories surrounding it incredibly helpful.  If you have an involved partner, I think you'd be fine without the class.

I see a lot of ladies on here who have success w/ just the books.  If you're still giving some classes a thought, we took the ones w/ Linda as well along w/ the BFing class from her business partner Sharon Mattes (b/c we missed the class that covered BFing & I was nervous!). We had a really diverse class and enjoyed the experience...we're actually meeting up  for our second reunion / baby play date for next month. :-)

Birth and Women's Center on Swiss Avenue, over by BUMC.

I actually ended up transferring to their backup OB for a version and then a c/s since LO was breech, but I was at BWC until 37 weeks =)

    Aww fun!

Were you at BWC? I know most of her classes are couples from there.

  • Honkytonk, no I was with one of the midwives @ Women's Health Alliance & had a great delivery at Baylor dwntwn.

We toured BWC but later realized I had craptastic school district insurance that wouldn't cover it.  Two couples in our class had good deliveries there, but another two plus someone I recently met did not have great experiences there nor good things to say about it. :-(

that's where we're going. i didn't know they had a requirement, so i'm glad i asked! i emailed Linda and she got back to me really fast with good answers to my questions. i'm hopeful that we'll be able to use her. the other teachers i've contacted either haven't replied, or haven't been able to address my questions in a way i was comfortable with. thanks for the recommendation!

Interesting. I've heard vary mixed opinions on it too- either very good or very bad.

But you're the second person I've heard good things from about WHA, I'll keep them in mind for next time. I wouldn't mind going back to Baylor, my nurses were so wonderful.

  • I really thought the class was helpful to both my husband and myself. It was more "hands on". It really prepared him for the birth of our son. I would pay the money and take the class...it was so worth it. Had I not taken the class I prob wouldn't have had a natural birth.
