3rd Trimester

1hr Glucose side effects?

I had a very strange experience after my GTT.  The test was at about 11am, and I had fasted (per orders) for the 12 previous hours.  Well, on my way home from the Dr's office, maybe 30 minutes after the draw, I almost fell asleep on the road.  I could barely stay on the road and eventually had to pull over and get some lunch.  I haven't gotten the results of my test, but could this be a big indicator of GD or could it mean the opposite? Thoughts?  Thanks!

Re: 1hr Glucose side effects?

  • I had the exact same thing. I felt fine throughout the test but on the way home I almost fell alseep. I stopped to get something to eat immediately after leaving dr office but couldnt eat much. I just felt run down. I went home and slept the whole day and had a major headache. I got the call 2 days ago that I failed and have to go for the 3 hour test monday. Not sure if the way I felt after was any indicator or not but it sucks to have to take the 3 hour knowing how bad the 1 hour made me feel.

  • maybe you experienced low blood sugar from not eating  or maybe you felt a little weak from the blood draw itself but I don't think there are any side effects from just drinking a sugary drink and getting blood drawn. I could be wrong though

  • I came home and napped immediately after my one-hour test; I hadn't been that exhausted since first tri. I passed with a 101, FWIW.

  • I felt horrible after mine too, dizzy, tired and confused -- until I ate. I didn't "fast", but I did go first thing in the am, early, so I had only had my coffee. Turns out my result was 64, which is a little low. That would explain it!

  • I didn't feel this way this time (and they haven't called yet but I believe I passed b/c they said they'd only call if there was a problem) but I took the 3-hour a few years ago b/c of my PCOS/insulin resistance and I felt that way, but I was in the waiting room of the doctor's office. I was almost passing out tired and super nauseaus. I don't remember my numbers but I know she said I was in the pre-diabetic range at that point.

  • I just had my test today so I don't know if I passed or failed, but ate a normal breakfast prior, and had lunch about 15 minutes after the draw. I came home and took a 2.5 hour nap, and I haven't napped since first trimester. This is weird!

I think this is pretty common.  It's an extreme sugar crash - fast, then massive amounts of sugar, then nothing.

If you haven't had your glucose test yet and are reading this - take something with you to eat immediately after you finish the test, something with some protein in it.
