Babywearing question

If you used a baby carrier, at what (baby) age did you start wearing the baby?  I have a Moby, an Ergo (and infant insert), and a Bjorn (from DS#1).  I didn't really wear DS#1, but want to with this baby. It feels like DS#2 is too young to stick in one of those carriers.  I think I'm wrong.  Just wondering what other people did.

Thanks!

Re: Babywearing question

  • I remember wearing J in the Moby when she was just 1-2 weeks old. I started with the cradle hold but then switched pretty quickly to the hug hold.

  • You can use the Moby from the get go...

  • We used the Moby right away, but then moved to the Bjorn when DD#2 was a solid 9 lbs. By then she was big and long enough to fit in there well. I had to wrap a blanket around her torso and head to support her neck, but only until she had enough head control to hold herself up well (at about 2 months). We're just now starting to use the Ergo, but she prefers facing out on the Bjorn. Hope that helps!

  • I started Holden in the Moby around 1 month, but I probably would have started him sooner if I had the moby sooner =)

  • I started with the Moby when G was just a few days old. It was my evil way of keeping her from MIL.. I mean bonding, yea it was definitely all about bonding Wink

I am coordinating the Seattle Area Babywearing's June meeting, it will be at the Richmond Beach Library from 11-12:30 if you feel like coming. You can get tons of support for the Moby and the Bjorn.

The July meeting will probably be on the East side, maybe at the Redmond Library but if you need/want support sooner, come in June!

  • I used the Moby for the first couple months then started with the Bjorn when she was about 2 months old.  And we switched her to forward facing in the Bjorn (unless she was really sleepy and I knew she'd conk out on me) when she was about 3 months.
  • I wore N in the Bjorn or Moby from about 2-4 mo, but would've used a Moby sooner if I'd had one.  I got a Beco when he was 4 months and that was it for us.
  • LOok at this:

That's how the newborn should be in a Moby - note how the whole baby is supported - even his head.  That's why it's ok to do a Moby from the beginning but not a Bjorn or Ergo (although I dont' know about the Ergo infant insert, so that might make a difference).

  • Moby and sling right away, Ergo with no insert around 4 months.

Girl, how are you parenting two and not wearing DS#2?!  You are superwoman! ;)

    Seriously!

  • I started wearing her in a sling/moby type thing the day she was born. The Bjorn (which I hated) was like 2 months??

  • I had William in the Moby within his 1st week.  I had to with Madelyn running around.

I've only just recently started putting him in an Ergo carrier, forward facing.  It's easier to get on and off when we're out and about.  My Moby is still my go to when we're at home/friends/family.

    Totally this.

We used the Bjorn starting at 1 month and the Ergo starting at 6 months. With the next baby, I am going to use the Ergo from the get go, that is what the infant insert is for. He's not too young for the Moby.

  • I was using the moby when E was only 4 lbs!! She came home in a car bed so I'd wear her in the moby and carry A in her carseat.

I'm planning to use my moby right away for baby #3 and then the Ergo.

  • Moby and sling from the beginning, Pikkolo from about 2 weeks old.  I will probably use the mei tai as well, but haven't done that yet.

I don't know how I would survive without the moby... Wyatt sleeps so well in it, and it allows me to still get things done around the house and parent Mattea.

  • Start using the moby now!  One of the tips for the moby(hug hold) that worked great for me was to put it on high and tight...you'll think there is now way the baby can fit in there but it stretches so much! I had a infant insert for the ergo too but I never really liked it and I started putting her it in without it around 4.5/5 months.

  • Ditto PPs on Moby from the start.  I think I used the Ergo with the infant insert around 6 weeks... he went through a Moby strike but loved the Ergo for a while.  The infant insert supports their head well.

  • Thank you everyone!  I am going to whip out the Moby tomorrow. Jill - thanks for that link!

I have to admit I've had a lot of help with parenting the two kids so far.  As in, DS#1 is in preschool during the days.  Either that or my mom has been around a lot to help.  And DH took the first 3 weeks off.  So now I'm on my own more I definitely need to get this babywearing thang down!

Thank you all for your helpful feedback.  I feel much more confident about using the Moby and Ergo!

  • There are good videos on YouTube as well that can help you with how to wrap it. And like someone else said, you wrap it tight. Don't leave room for the baby. It works out. And any get discouraged. It's hard at first but it gets really easy.

  • I'm with everyone else as far as the Moby and Ergo and timing.  Sometimes she fusses when I'm first getting her into a carrier, but as soon as we're moving, she's happy as a clam.  I also got a mei tai when she was about 4 months old, and she seems to prefer that to the Ergo, although it takes a few more minutes to get it tied.  It's also prettier. :)  Happy babywearing!
