Very Scared...please help! Diagnosed with UTI and given Macrobid

Hi Ladies. I am so scared that I am crying as I write this. I was told today that my Urine tested positive for a Urine Infection and that I need to take Macrobid 100 mg. for 5 days. I am nearly 33 weeks pregnant. I lost my first baby late in the 1st trimester and I took an antibiotic at the time and have always had a fear of all medications during pregnancy. I have had 3 colds throughout my pregnancy and have fought them naturally so I could avoid antibiotics.I have gestational diabetes and receve NST's twice a week where I get to hear my precious Miracle's heartbeat. I can feel him moving inside me and I am petrified to take this medication for the fear that I won't feel him move or will lose him so close to having him in my arms. Please write me if you have taken this before or have some info. that can put this Momma's mind at ease. God Bless over each of you and your babies.

Re: Very Scared...please help! Diagnosed with UTI and given Macrobid

  • i've had kidney issues my whole pregnancy.  had a stone that i couldn't pass at 16 weeks and had to have a nephrostomy tube till 34 weeks when they finally removed the stone because of all the utis and kidney infections i was getting.  i've been on multiple antibiotics, iv and oral, and so far everything is going well with baby.  he/she has been healthy and happy inside the whole time.  try not to worry, its hard, but i'm sure you will be fine.  people take antibitoics all the time when they are pregnant.  the infection is a greater risk than the meds.
  • I had a UTI in my second trimester and was prescribed antibiotics and she is still doing just fine. I don't think they would prescribe the medications to you if they felt it might put your baby in danger. :)  It's ok, your baby will be just fine, hang in there.

    *hugs*!!!

  • Had A UTI at 18 weeks and given the same medication and baby is perfectly fine. Its better to take them then to risk something worse happening...(kidney infection) which I don't know a whole lot about personally but know its way more complicated than a UTI which is very common during pregnancy anyway. Don't worry! It will be fine :)

A urinary tract infection left untreated can lead to kidney infection. Kidney infections can cause premature labor. It is much better for you and the baby to treat the infection early rather than let it grow into a much bigger problem.

Also, fyi - antibiotics will not help a cold. A cold is a virus & there is no "cure" for viruses.

Drink plenty of water, take your meds, & relax. You're going to be just fine. :)

I've been taking macrobid both before and throughout my pregnancy on an "as needed" basis to prevent UTIs. The prescribing Urologist, my OB and Perinatologist, and our LO's pediatrician have all said it is safe to take during pregnancy.

I will also second the PPs who say taking the meds is important to clear up the infection before it moves to your kidneys. Feel better soon!

  • I am 38w now and am currently on Cephalexin for a UTI.  I will second the PP on the you don't want a kidney infection those are worse and could require more intervention, better to go ahead and take care of it now.

  • I had to take an antibiotic about the same gestation with my daughter and everything was fine. I know it is easier said than done (especially after a loss, I lost my first pregnancy too) but try not to worry too much, just pay attention to your LOs movement and if anything is out of the normal or seems even a little less, dont feel bad about going in and asking for an NST.  Your mental state is important too, and your doctor should understand that.

  • I have taken macrobid during all of my pregnancies. More than once in the last one. I've had 2 healthy babies and going in for the 3rd birth tomorrow. Relax a uti can actually cause premature labor. Antibiotics are safe!

  • I had a UTI and took Macrobid at 26 weeks. The UTI (which I was unaware I even had) sent me to L&D with contractions every 2-4 minutes. I had to stay overnight until the contractions were brought under control. They sent me home with the Macrobid and everything has been fine.

The Macrobid is far safer than an infection that can send you into preterm labor. It is a class B drug, which is considered safe in pregnancy. Your little one will be fine.

  • With ds1 I had pneumonia and was in the hospital on iv antibiotics for 3 days. DS is healthy as can be and a thriving 18 month old. I hope you get your mind at ease, good luck with your little one!
Mom to 2 healthy boys, and a baby girl in Heaven. Heard her heartbeat on 7/18, heartbeat was gone on 7/20. Miss you forever.

  • If it makes you feel any better, where I work (I'm a nurse) Macrobid is the preferred antibiotic to treat UTI's because it only effects the urinary tract and doesn't usually cause all of the other nasty side effects that you can get from other antibiotics. We LOVE it when we can treat somebody with Macrobid instead of some of the harsher meds. So don't worry about it, you and baby will be just fine.HTH.

  • I ended up "living" off of macrobid during my pregnancy with DD. I literally had a UTI every month, and DD was just fine. I'm sorry about your previous experiance, but getting this worked up over it isn't going to help anything. You have made it to third tri, take a deep breath and take the meds. UTI's can lead to contractions, or a Kidney infection which can also lead contractions and preterm labor. Macrobid is plenty safe, and hella safer than risking the UTI getting any worse.
  • With DS1 I had two UTI's that turned into SEVER kidney infections and was hospitalized twice for more then a week at a time. I was on heavy antibiotics and pain meds (the kidney infection was worse then labor for me). You will be fine just try not to stress. Your doctor knows your history and would not prescribe you something that they thought was going to harm the baby. In fact the worse you could do in this situation is not take the meds!

  • I've had 2 UTI's during the 2nd trimester and took Macrobid both times. I haven't had any problems, LO is measuring right on time, he's super active and thriving in my belly. The Macrobid did make me feel like crap for a few days but once the cycle was over I was back to my old self. It's a Category B drug (www.safefetus.com) so it's pretty safe.

If you're really worried about it (and it sounds like you are) I'm sure your doctor or a nurse at the office wouldn't mind talking you through the risks and the benefits. Give them a call back - it's what we pay them for right?

    Good Luck to you!!

I got a UTI between 32-33 weeks as well. I was prescribed macrobid and took the full 7 days worth. I'm now 38 weeks and baby is still doing just fine. I wouldn't worry about it. UTI's are very common with pregnant women and macrobid is a very common prescription that they give for it so you are not alone!

  • I'm currently taking Macrobid for a UTI and I'm 32 weeks. Little girl is still bouncing like crazy, I'm already feeling better and having much less frequent BH's. The only change is that my pee is neon yellow.

As previous posters have said, the risks associated with a kidney infection are far worse. Just relax and feel better soon!

  • My Husband and I cannot thank you all enough for taking the time to put me at ease. I woke up this morning and cried when I saw all of the positive responses. May God Bless you all and your Miracles :) I took 1st dose this morning with a prayer and tears. God is good as He has made sure my little guy kicked me consistently today to reassure me that he is alright. I was just so confused because I have no symptoms of a Urine Infection but my Dr. said I have 2 bacteria's and I may need to take another antibiotic. One step at a time. It's all in God's hands and I know He will protect this little life He has blessed us with and myself. May He protect you all as well. Thank you. Maria
