What type of pot do you cook rice in?

Just curious! I have been using a regular sauce pot, but it's not been working well and the rice sticks to the sides terribly!  Thanks!

  • I have a rice cooker.  I love it.  We use it at least once a week.  We have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Aroma-ARC-838TC-Digital-Cooker-Steamer/dp/B000HKFE8G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305144114&sr=8-1

I've also heard that you can cook rice like pasta with lots of water.

  • I stopped cooking rice on the stove about 7 years ago when my favorite aunt shared with me her recipe for successful rice via the microwave .. yep.  It's easy and tastes yum.  It has a lot to do with the type/brand of rice you use as well.

Edit  - forgot to say that any bowl that is microwave safe will work - I use a glass bowl and then put a cover on it.

Hmmm...I don't know about this.  If you were to use too much water to cook rice your rice will turn into asian porridge.  We use a rice cooker.  It's really the only way to go.  If you have an asian supermarket closeby you can get them cheap.

  • I use a regular pot (like what I would use to cook soup or any other pasta in).  I've never had a problem with sticking.  I just use about double the amount of water for the amount of rice (ie - 1/2 cup rice and 1 cup water).  I don't even use butter or salt.  My husband puts a tbsp of oil in water for spaghetti, so maybe if you did that it would stop sticking as well?

  • We just use a sauce pot on the stove. I don't really understand the point of a rice cooker since it's so easy just to make it on the stove. Plus, I definitely do not have the extra room for it!

Clearly you don't make rice daily or almost daily like my parents and sometimes I do.  You make a big batch and it can sit in the cooker all day staying warm, whereas you can't do that with a pot.  Plus, there isn't any concern about burning the rice or even thinking about it.  It's like a mini slow-cooker.  Set it and forget it!

Actually, I make it a few times a week. Not sure why I would want it to sit and stay out all day either. I never burn my rice and I also don't use a crock pot. Rice is so straight forward and easy to make. Boil and simmer and it's done when the rest of my dinner is done. Easy as pie.

I have friends who love their rice cookers, but I truly just don't get it. I just read "Julie & Julia" and the rice cooker debate is mentioned in the book. It made me lol.

Seriously?  There's an actual debate on it?  It's just rice.  Either way, to each their own.  I think rice cookers are great for those who may not want to think about the rice cooking over the stove.  Plus, never had a problem in terms of quality when left in the cooker for a couple hours.

  • I have a Zojirushi rice cooker and absolutely love it.
  • We have a rice cooker and wouldn't cook rice any other way.

    BakedLaura, why so defensive?

LOL, I'm not defensive I just don't get it. Making rice is the simplest thing ever and I really truly do not understand spending money on an extra gadget, plus storing this large extra gadget to do something so simple. It doesn't make sense at all to me! That's why I thought it was so funny in "Julie & Julia" because I've had this discussion with my friends who are so into their rice cookers. In the book, Julie was neutral about the topic, but was surprised at how much debate it got on her blog. People feel strongly about their rice cookers! Or lack thereof in my case. :)

  • Success boil in a bag rice for my house.  We don't eat a ton of rice and the small bags are perfect portions for the three of us.
  • Just a regular sauce pot. I never have an issue with sticking. I also dont make rice hours in advance before eating it. I can see if I was hosting a large function and people were going to be plating their own food at different times, but rice with dinner a couple times a week for us doesmt warrant a rice cooker.
  • rice cookers are great for brown rice...white rice cooks fine in the microwave or stove but brown (for me) does not.

rice cookers cost $10, are very small AND they often come with a steamer basket for veggies. i cannot believe people are so anti-rice cookers.  LOL!
