Weight ?

1st I want to say Hi!  I have never posted on this board and just stuck with the baby boards once I got pregnant. But now I have a question.

Anyways we had DS2 3 y/o appointment today.  For the past 6 months I have been pushing to find out about his weight.  He is 56.5 lbs and 39 in and just turned 3.  This appointment and the last one the doc was out so we had to see the PA.  I asked her if he could have a thyroid problem she said she doubted it and left it at that.

So I asked again today and again she said no that we will wait and see in 3 months.  On top of his weight his BP was on the high side today 128/70 which can be caused from thyroid issues.

I called a new pedi and we go in Monday.  I just want to make sure that there is not an underlying issue.  And if not than I have a line backer in training!

So my ? is, is there anyone else with a bog boy out there?  And sorry this is so long!

Re: Weight ?

  • I have the opposite issue (skinny kids) but more than 20 pounds in one year seems quite excessive to me. My Pedi said they should average between 5-10 pounds a year at this age. Good for you for calling a different doctor. I would want to know the underlying issue too, if there is one. Let us know how that appointment goes. Oh! And FWIW, my son will be 3 next month but was just weighed this week and is 32 pounds fully clothed. Good luck!

  • I'll also add, he was 8.5 lbs at birth, 21 pounds at 12 months and 26.5 pounds at 2 years.... Just so you can see his growth pattern....

  • I think your doing the right thing.  My kids are the reverse, but I would not be comfortable not finding a doctor who would address the issue on either spectrum.  At 56 pounds, your 3 year old weighs the same as the average 8 or 9 year old boy.  To even be at the top of the chart (95%), you would expect him to be 5.5-6 years.  His BMI is 26, which is considered overweight.  Definitely worth a conversation with a doctor.   Good luck.  Hope the new doctor is helpful.

  • I would definitely get a second opinion.  DS is in the 95% for weight and 75% for height.  Our pedi is concerned and wants us to watch his diet and make sure he is not eating too many carbs.  FWIW he is 4 and weighs 43 lbs and is 44.5 inches tall.
  • I'm a huge believer in Mother's instincts!  I don't know much about the weight thing but I can see why you would like to look further into things.

I know with my daughter they told me she was perfect but I knew there was something wrong.  I'm glad I didn't stop looking until we found out what was wrong.  We would have lost crucial time if I had just given up after a doc rebuffed me.

  • Wow.  My off-the-chart nearly 6-year-old weighs 58 lbs.  But, he's also off-the-chart heightwise and the doc isn't concerned (he's over 4 ft tall).  He's very, very solid (his BMI does put him in the overweight category, which makes me made because he looks fine).

So, my question is, how tall is he?  If he's proportionate, then the doctors may not worry too much.

What would worry me more is 20 lbs in a year.  I think you are doing the right thing by pushing it and asking for some blood work.

  • I also think you're doing the right thing.

    Good luck!

  • Not a boy, but it sounds almost like you're describing my DD. She has been consistently on the 75th percentile (sometimes 76th, but you get the idea) for height and 90th for weight since she was 2. Before that, she was in the 90th for height as well... or 95th, depending on the appointment. The doctors have not been concerned since she is following her own (albeit greater than average) growth curve. We know she gets plenty of exercise and veggies - it's just genetics. We are trying to make sure she is getting more exercise and less sweets, though. I think we've slacked on that in the last few months while hubby and I were finishing our degrees. She is 45 pounds and 42 inches tall... as of a few weeks ago... she has since had another growth spurt, so I am guessing she's taller and heavier than that at this moment. I've never personally worried about her weight since when I look at her in her underwear, she doesn't have fat rolls or anything like that... she's actually kind of muscular. She's just never going to be one of those petite, skinny little kids. I can definitely see her playing a lot of sports, though.

  • Thanks ladies!

We are not a big family.  I weigh 135, my DH less then that and DS1 weighs 65lbs and is 11.  So for him to be 56lbs at 3 is alarming to us.

I would rather be safe then sorry.  And I am so anxious and ready for this new doctor on Monday!
