We had to take Bella to a pedi derm for her persistant diaper rash. The MD gave us several suggestions for Bella. She said it's from friction and contact with moisture and not bacteria or anything else. We do change her every 2 hours during the day (usually she's not wet that often but just to be sure we check her) but she sleeps in a wet diaper for who knows how long at night. I know Libby has been fighting a rash too so I thought I'd share
She said to let her soak in the tub then wash her and take her RIGHT out after rinsing her off and not to let her sit in soapy water (we already did this).
She said not to lotion that area (we already didn't).
ONLY use vaseline and NOTHING else, she said many other creams cause the rashes to get worse. She said she's seen kids have raging rashes from Desitin. We had previously tried EVERY otc cream and two prescription creams.
She said to only use all free and clear or purex free and clear soap, no soap with perfumes, especially for her diapers. We have always used purex so this was good for us.
She gave us prescription hydrocortisone to apply a pea size amt 2xday and then put vaseline on all other times. She said be liberal with the vaseline.
So we're trying all of that. We use prefolds with fleece liners so the vaseline isn't a real issue and honestly, who cares if it ruins my diapers, I don't plan on selling them. I plan to use them for all my kids until they fall apart and then use them as cleaning rags We've invested about $490 diapers (breakdown in my blog) and that's less than we would have spent if we would have used sposies all of this time so even if we stopped today, we would have got our money out of them.
Not sure if any of this will help you with Libby but I thought it might so I hope you don't mind me sharing it with you.
Re: *Libby's mama Lori*
Butting in - we are currently battling with rashes. Since E has started eating rice cereal, she's been pooping more (no it's not diarrhea). She has sensitive skin so if we don't catch the poop and it sits on her bum, she gets a bad rash! We just started using fleece liners. How do you get poop off of it? Do you use a sprayer? LO had a really bad rash yesterday (bums really red) so we aired the bum out, put the anti bacterial ointment that pedi prescribed and topped with CJ's butter (which I just purchased). This morning, the rash has cleared up a bit.
We check Bella every 2 hours no matter what! If I smell poop I check, if she's playing and she hasn't pooped in awhile, I check (I sound OCD but it's true), her bum is that sensitive!
We use a kitchen scrapper to get the poop off of the fleece liners. I've never used a sprayer. I have some friends that have them and love them and other friends hate them so I haven't ever purchased one.
As far as the rash, I would try the vaseline if what you are doing doesn't help. Diaper rashes SUCK!
Thanks Sarah! We switched back to CDs during the day about a week ago and so far, so good. She's gotten a little redness from poop (again on her for less than 2 minutes since she tells us immediately when she poops) but we air her out about 3 times a day and California Babies Diaper Cream slathered on the redness seems to be working.
I've also let her bathe in some Aveeno Oatmeal bath. We've stopped using an organic bubble bath (we used it about once or twice a week before) and that seems to have helped as well. I also switched her back into her infant sized PFs and am trifolding them with the selvages face down in the cover for a smoother, less bunchy fit. We also make sure the elastic on her legs is up by her crotch and doesn't have her thighs tucked up with it (which I think was causing extra chaffing).
I'll keep the Vaseline in mind. I've hear it can ruin CDs though. How much are you using and are you changing your wash routine. Does it primarily get on the fleece liners? And how do you keep the fleece liners from bunching up? That's my concern. We have some Thirsities Duo diaper that we've used for overnights but I think the fleece actually irritates her skin. So we've been using sposies at night. For now, I am okay with that, because they keep her skin drier than the CDs, even with microfiber and hemp doublers.
I am glad you've found a solution for Bella's rash...it so sad to see them so uncomfortable with inflamed and itchy skin. We have some prescription antibiotic cream that is petroleum based that I have used on Libby when it was really bad and it cleared things up almost immediately.
