OBX recs

My hubby and I are taking our little guy to the Outer Banks for a week long vacation in June.  We will be staying in several different areas there throughout the week. I know we want to go to Kitty Hawk and maybe see some of the lighthouses, but am trying to plan out some things.  Just wondering if those who live around there or have vacationed there have any recommendations of hotels, baby-friendly activities and/or restaurants, or just anything that you think we must put on our to-do list while we are there.  Thanks for your help!

  • The Hilton Garden Inn and the Hampton are both very good chain hotels there.  The prices are typically a bit higher so we have tried a few other places as well.  We really like the Colony Inn IV (motelbythesea.com), it has been renovated fairly recently, the rooms are very large, the staff is great and the price is fantastic for the location.  We always stay in the tower building on the second floor or higher.  The only con I can give you is that if you are on a lower floor under someone you can hear their bathroom - ick - but everything else is great.

We love Mama Kwan's and Coastal Provisions.  We always make sure to go to both of those when we go, we get the fish tacos at Mama Kwan's and a crab cake sandwich from Coastal Provisions.  Mama Kwan's is a tiny place but good and not bad for kids.  Coastal Provisions is really a market that you can order from the deli and it is so worth it.

We go to the lighthouses.  If you look up the Corolla lighthouse sometimes they have a wild horse there on display that was taken in and tamed that they let the kids pet and it was a big hit with my little boy.  We did that, playground, beach and we were set as far as baby friendly and didn't need anything else to occupy our time, but you can definitely find other attractions in Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head area.
