Prenatal classes at Fairview

We're going to be first-time parents in October and will deliver at Fairview Southdale. We got a brochure about prenatal classes that is about 10 pages long! I guess I assumed there was 1 prenatal class and you took it, but apparently you have choices. Birth & Parenting Preparation, Birth & Parenting Preparation Extended (includes baby care and breast feeding info.), just a breastfeeding class, The World of the Newborn (not explained what this involves), Infant and Child CPR, etc. Has anybody taken all or 1 of these? Recommendations? Do we take all of them? Does the one class cover everything?

A friend - also a new mom-to-be - is recommending some of the free seminars at Amma Maternity in Edina, so I am going to one on cloth diapering over there. Other thoughts or suggestions?

  • We did the express childbirth and breastfeeding classes. They were good and met our needs. Congrats on the LO. :)

We did the Birth and Parenting Preparation Express last month.  It was a lot of information over 2 days, but I'd rather do it over one weekend rather than dragging it out one night a week for 6 or 7 weeks.  I thought the class was very helpful and we got a lot of great tips and tricks.
    BFP #1: 9/26/10 DD: 5/2011
    BFP #2: 7/23/14 - MC: 8/28/14
    BFP #3: 2/22/15 - MC: 3/3/15
    BFP #4: 5/20/15 - Stick baby stick!!!
  • For our first child we did the extended with bf and did take a cpr class.

We made a date out of a weekly- usually included ice cream after class :)  It was good info.

We are doing the Birth & Parenting Preparation class that is one night a week for 5 weeks. I am also planning to take the breast feeding and CPR courses.

  • We did the Birth and Parenting Prep and the Breastfeeding class. I did a lot of reading and a lot of bump reading about childbirth etc. so I felt that the Birth and Parenting Prep wasn't entirely beneficial for me but DH got a LOT of great information about labor/delivery and parenting. He didn't read any books or look on message boards like I did, so I thought the class was worth it so he would know what was happening. He even seemed to find it interesting and informative. Although we never had to time contractions or have my water break- I was induced- but at least we are prepared for the next baby.

The breastfeeding class was really informative and worth the $ for me personally. I knew I wanted to BF and it provided me with a lot of helpful information.

We took the Weekend Childbirth class - I thought it was well done - it was great for the Dad's.

I would also rec the CPR class which I never took but should have!!!

I also delivered at Fairview Southdale & we took the Birth & Parenting Prep class last summer.  I thought it was pretty good.

I do HIGHLY suggest taking the Mom & Baby course after baby has arrived.  I loved that & I loved connecting with other new moms.  My class still meets up for a playdate every month & in the fall, we will be having a big "1st Birthday Party" with all of us to celebrate our first year!  Good Luck!

Yes! Take the Mom and Baby course. It's only $35 or so and you meet Moms with babies the same age as yours. Our group didn't meet afterwards but I did make friends with a couple ladies/and babies that we still hang out with a yr later.
