Monitored, Medicated IUI

...for those of you who did a monitored medicated IUI, how many ultrasounds did you get that cycle. I am trying to figure out cost. They told me between 2 and 6 ultrasounds at about $400 a piece.

This will be my first one and originally I was told that everything except the IUI is covered and now they are saying nothing associated with the IUI is covered.

Re: Monitored, Medicated IUI

  • I want to say we had 3 u/s each cycle. More if I was responding slowly

  • We had 2 per cycle @ $300 each. Keep in mind you aren't FORCED to have extra ultrasounds. There were a couple of times my RE wanted me to do extra ultrasounds and I suggested we wait until the one we already had scheduled and it all ended up working fine. Just talk to your RE to see what is reasonable and of course they need to recognize that cost may be a concern for you.

  • Maybe two or three....yes, probably three.  One early in the cycle, one around day 10 and then another a few days later to pick a trigger date.  I think.  It's all foggy now. FWIW, our insurance covered everything so I wasn't concerned.  If we do it again and we are OOP I would probably skip at least the initial u/s and just wait for the follie checks.

Woah what insurance do you have !!! Who is it through ! SO lucky! We had a crap load of ultrasounds day 3 and then tons of follie check but it was all included in the price.  There were at least 4 or 5

  • 2-3 is normal.  FWIW, my RE wouldn't let us have any fewer than 2 (CD1, 2, or 3 and somewhere between 10-12).  They charge $375 for the 1st and $275 for the 2nd.  My insurance doesn't cover anything either.  It sucks.
  • it depended. on Clomid it was 1-2, I don't think either of us ever had 3 although it's possible I'm forgetting (we also didn't have early cycle u/s, though). on injectables I had a lot, like 4 or 5 each cycle I think.
  • I did follistim and I think I had at least 4 maybe 5. One at the start (CD1) and a least 3 before triggering.

  • On Clomid, we did the baseline on CD3 and a check around 13 I think, with one more before trigger due to slow response.  It was many, many more on injectibles - pretty much every other day from CD6-17. My insurance covered it all (well, with a copay) except the IUI though.
  • Thank you all for your feedback. I have been on the phone with my insurance company which is Tricare and they say they cover it*. The RE's office is saying that they have never submitted for it because it was apart of the IUI. I told them to please try to get a authorization for the ultrasounds so I am not footing the bill for 4-6 ultrasounds at $400 a pop!

*They other thing Tricare told me is that the code will determine reimbursement. So if it is diagnostic, then it's covered, if its for "infertility," it "may" not be! I was like can you change my diagnosis to Endo! LOL!

We shall see. Wish me luck! A $340 bill is better than a $2000 bill any day!

good luck! none of our pre-conception procedures were covered. boo. but my doc was super awesome and only charged us the insurance reimbursement rate, so our bill was ~$400, instead of several thousand!
