Has anyone been diagnosed with pubic symphysis separation? Have you been treated for it, and has it worked?
My doctor told me that I have this, after I went in yesterday to see her because walking around and really doing any physical activity at all is causing major pain in my pelvis, making it nearly impossible for me to go anywhere/do anything! This all started last Friday; no symptoms before then. I start physical therapy tomorrow, so hopefully that'll help.
I'm just looking for some encouragement - I can't imagine not being able to get around for the next 7 weeks!! Of course, to the ladies on bedrest, which I am not, I don't mean to sound ungrateful. I am just hoping there's a chance for some relief in the near future!!
Re: Pubic symphysis separation?
I am in the same boat you are...I have been having issues with my pelvis for the past 2 1/2wks and it has just gotten WAY worse since last Friday. I have never said anything to my dr about it before now but I'm having a horrible time just trying to walk, get up from sitting, roll over in bed. It's not because my belly is big and I have lots of extra weight, it's because my crotch literally feels like it is going to rip in half (and causes me to yell out a lot.) I hope the pt works, I doubt I'll be doing any of that since I'm so far along but who knows!! I know that Nickiechan has what you're talking about and has been going to pt, you might try paging her but she may not answer you because she might have went into labor!
Thanks for the info!
My doctor also recommended a support belt that holds your hips together. She said she thinks you can get them at Babies R Us, and definitely at medical supply stores, in case that interests you. A physical therapist can fit me for a custom one, but if I wasn't going to PT, I'd probably try BRU.
I don't know if I've been officially diagnosed but I have been having a lot of the same problems for the past couple weeks. My MW suggested going to a Chiropractor and she said that exercising in a pool can help, too. She told me the only thing that would "cure" it would be having the baby. Going to a Chiropractor doesn't really appeal to me but I have been wearing a support belt and that seems to help a lot, especially on days when I know I'm going to be walking a lot. My MW also offered to prescribe me a walker (AACK!) but thankfully I still feel like I can hobble around without one.
I just re-read my post and realize I don't offer a lot of encouragement, but I totally get where you're coming from so I hope that helps a little to know you're not alone. It all has to end eventually, right? And think of the prize we get in the end.
I don't have the seperation just the dysfunction. I tried all the suggestions given to me. The only things that i have found that helps me (and it has helped me a ton) are these exercises:
I lay on my back on my bed (the floor is killer). My knees are up to the ceiling. DH stradles my feet and pushes my knees together, i then push against his hands to open up my legs butterfly style. I can then feel my hips and lower back kind of pop back into place. At first this really hurt and sometimes still does but after about 6 reps of that I feel so much better.
I lay on my back on bed and DH pulls my legs. Almost like he is tryin to dislocate them. He does it in a steady pressure not a jerky quick motion. It hurts but feels good at the same time.
I have always slept with a pillow between my legs so that doesn't change here.
I have also found that if I set up a very squishy pillow that i lay my upper body on (think length wise) it helps line my back up with my hips and my hips/pelvis don't hurt nearly as much in the morning. So basically I am at in incline with my upper body on a nice squishy pillow with my hips touching the bed and a pillow between my legs.
I think swimming would be wonderful but we have had horrible dusty windstorm here so no swimming at this point in time.
Hope this helps. I did notice that all the stuff that said to keep my knees together hurt my pelvis more.
No baby yet...
Just having pre-labor symptoms... Will find out more with my appointment today.
I've been suffering through this since 27 weeks... it really does suck!! I was officially bond to a wheelchair and walker around the house around 33 weeks when I was falling all over the place (literally). My midwife beleives that I have Diastasis Symphysis Pubis (DSP) which is the severe form of SPD (where the pubic symphysis actually separates severely or tears), but they cannot give a diagnosis until they give me an xray after baby is born.

I think PT has helped with managing the pain... at first I could barely walk and I was in a constant pain of 8/10, now it is lowered to around 2-3/10. I know it can be extremely depressing and try to just take one hour at a time... and not look at the big picture.

I think the only relief you will have will be once the baby is born sadly. If you need anymore information or encouragement please just PM me...
