VBAC after two c-sections?

Hello everyone! I am new to the board, and just found out that we are expecting baby # 3!!

I know that this is a question to pose to my OB, but was hoping someone here might have some information anyway, as my first appointment with my doctor is still a few weeks off.

Is it possible to have a VBAC after two c-sections? With my son, I had a c for failure to progress with a failed induction, with my daughter, it was a scheduled RCS as she was breech and not turning at all.  I would really like to try to have a vaginal birth, but am not sure if I am even allowed to try having had two c-sections with no prior vaginal births.

 Any thoughts? TIA!

Re: VBAC after two c-sections?

  • There are a lot of ladies on my local ICAN board who have had successful VBACs after 2 and even 4 c-sections.  We have a wonderful OB in our area who will take on patients with multiple sections and/or special scars.

  • Yes, it is absolutely possible.  I am proud of you for considering it!

From my personal experience and hearing stories, not as many OBs are willing to take patients for VBAmC (m=multiple), but they are out there.  If your current OB says its not an option then you'll have to shop around for someone who is onboard.

  • I just called and spoke with my practitioner, and she says that they are absolutely willing to let me have a TOL, but that they won't let me go past my EDD, and that induction isn't an option...that doesn't sound very "willing" to me.  I am so hopeful that I will be able to find a doctor who will at least let me try without all of the restrictions...

I'm going for the VBA2C.  My son was an emergency C due to a failed NST and my daughter was a RCS (tried to vbac with #2 but my "friendly" vbac doc wouldn't let me go past my due date, hence the RCS).

This time around I contacted my local ICAN chapter and found several docs that support a VBAMC.  My suggestion is find a more supportive doc who won't place as many restrictions on you.  Good luck!

I agree.  That's not very willing.  I hope you find someone more supportive.

  • Unfortunately all doctors are different. If it's something that you are interested in, than I would look for a doctor that would be willing to help you out with that. My doctor is VERY much for VBAC's, he even told me that he thinks too many doctors are taking the easy way out and instead of letting woman give birth, are just going for c-sections. He told me that in his opinion even if a woman had already had 3 c-sections he would still reccommend a VBAC. Definitely reserach it. GL!

  • I had a VBA4C at home in December 2010. It was amazing. I suggest taking a vbac class from a Doula or Midwife. Get as much info as you can. Ask questions [at the class] about which Dr or Midwife the other students are using for their vbac birth. Ask which hospitals in your area or more vbac-friendly. Go to ICAN website and saturate yourself in knowledge. Thats what we did along with prayer. Our birth attendent didn't actually make in time for the birth and my husband actually delivered our baby. Thanks to the class, we knew exactly what to do.

    Good Luck ;)

  • lkf041 your C for baby #2 was just the scenerio I went through 2 weeks ago. My doc was supportive and all about VBAC until I hit 40 1/2 weeks. I was in labor when I went in for my scheduled C but since I was 4 days after my due date he did not want to wait any longer. I wish I would of done more research and knew about ICAN...and seen what others had to say before I had my second C. I know I want more kids so I have begun early looking into VBAC after 2 Csections. There so far I have not found much information on them. I wish you all the luck with your VBA2C. Let us know how everything goes.
