boys 'holding it' - pee related :)

ladies - anyone have experience with boys who have constant dry diapers execpt for when they wake up from sleeping? Vin is holding it all day long and refusing to use the potty. He only has wet diapers when he wakes up as he must go in his sleep. Luc is a pee-champion. :)

Should I be concerned? Any advice?

Potty training is hard. I hope when I stay home with the boys we can focus on this.

  • I would just give him tons of drinks all day, and then ask him a lot and REALLY make a big positive thing about it even if he hints that he would pee in the potty, and just ignore it if he says no. We are going thru the same thing but with poop. He always holds it, but I am trying to make it a super positive thing and then he gets a treat (choc chip) if he goes in the potty. It seems to be working pretty good so far...

  • Are you trying to potty train now? Is he wearing underpants? How has he reacted to accidents? I would probably ask him of he wants to go back to diapers and let him if he says yes. It sounds to me like he's experiencing some anxiety about it and might need a break. You can also try telling him that it's not good for your Body to hold it like that. Ask him if he can try when a buzzer goes off or something like that? My friends little girl got some uti's from holding it like that and her urologist said they have to go five times a dayto not stretch out and maybe hurt their bladders. So if you think he'd respond to that logic you could try. But my inclination would be to just back off and try again in a month.

  • Oh, potty training is so bewildering.  I wish I could just reason with him!

I had to many UTI's from holding it when I was little. My mom would coax me to sit on the toilet and read me a story, or give me a clipboard to draw a picture. I guess the feeling of my bum being free, and having something else to "focus on" made me relax enough to let the pee free. To this day I have to have something to focus on while going! Whether it is solitaire on my phone, or a book. But It worked!
