Am I the only one who doesn't get the whole crib bedding set thing? From what I understand you don't want to use the bumpers and you can't have any blankets in with the kid, so really all you need are sheets. Or not?
Same here. And most of the nicer ones are over $200! I wouldn't use the bumper or the comforter anyway, so it's basically a $200 crib sheet. I'd rather take that money and spend it on organic crib sheets!
We bought one for our DD and are now going to sell it! We only used the sheets and crib skirt. Although we use a blanket with DD (and have her whole life) we use a homemade quilt from my mom. We've never used bumpers either and DD is 9 months old. They are a waste of money IMO and I really wish we hadn't bought it. Good news is we got one that is now discontinued so we will actually get a decent amount back for it... Almost what we paid!
SAHM to the sweetest little girl and boy... I love my job!
I used a breathable bumper when my daughter got older. The sheets and skirt are really the only things you need. But, you can use the blanket for tummy time!
Yup, I agree. So, you are basically paying around $200 for a sheet and crib skirt. This is the reason I am making my own stuff. A crib skirt is easy to make so I just ordered some fabric to make it and also the curtains. (I will just register for a few crib sheets as you will definitely need more than one). For less than the cost of a pre-packaged set I got enough fabric to make : crib skirt, curtains, changing pad cover, plastic bag holder, fabric to cover the switch/outlet plates, fabric to cover wodden letters (for baby's name) and some to spare.

I'm planning on registering for a few sets of sheets and a breathable bumper. We already have DH's old baby quilt and I'm not a fan of bed skirts in general.
When I was pregnant with #1 I didn't want a bedding set, I planned on making the crib skirt and valance. When I was shopping at a local baby boutique with my mom, I actually found a really cute brand new bedding set that was $250, but marked down (plus with a coupon I had) to $25. Since I couldn't make the crib skirt and valance for that cheap, I bought it (they also threw in a wallpaper border for free- which I cut and framed for some wall art).
I hung the quilt on the wall above the crib, and actually used the bumper once my son was extremely mobile (around 10-12 months) so he wouldn't bump his head. Personally, I would NEVER pay what stores ask for those sets, but I couldn't pass up $25 for one. But also, I didn't want to spend a fortune on the nursery when I'd rather save that money for a "big kid's" room that they will enjoy for many more years- and can be tailored to their interests.
I plan on getting regular crib sheets and then finding a fun quilt/blanket on Etsy, more for decoration. I can't believe how much some of the crib sets are in the stores... that's bonkers!!
For some reason I didn't do a lot of research before I bought our bedding set for DS. I bought everything, bumper, blanket, sheets and crib skirt. It is all really cute, but the expensive bumper and blanket are now sitting in his closet unused. I'm not at all craftty, so I have no idea what to do with it.
Stick with nice sheets and a crib skirt if you want one.
With my first, we bought a set at Target ($60). It came with a quilt that I used as wall art. I also loved the froggie sheets and matching crib skirt that came with it. We used a breathable bumper. I advise my friends not to get a set, unless you are going to use teh quilt on the wall and you love most of the other items. Target has coordinating sheets that you can buy seperately to match the sets, as well. I bought an additional sheet that matched the froggie colors, (plus some basic colors at a garage sale.)

This exactly. Etsy has so much great stuff! My MIL is going to make a crib skirt as well, for when the mattress is up high.
I got a pottery barn bed skirt that is perfect for the kiddos room for $4.00, we will oonly be buying sheets and wait and see how many freakin blankets we get as gifts before going out to buy any. I already have a twin size quilt for out of bed cuddling
We have a crib bedding set for DS and plan to pick out one for this baby as well. Maybe it's because my ILs bought DS's and are buying the new one as well that the cost doesn't bother me. I like the cohesive look in a nursery rather than randomness.
We got one the first time around, because it seemed like a good idea, but we didn't use the valence and the comforter we tried using once, but it was ridiculously large in the crib (FWIW, DS was almost 2). So, we only used the bumper, the crib skirt and the sheet. Oh, well. I will use those same things with number 2.
