Taking DS to the dentist tomorrow--any tips?

Logan's first dental exam is tomorrow.  I've been talking to him about it, and he is receptive, but I'm still nervous he's going to freak when the time comes.  Luckily I am taking him to my pediatric dentist whom I love.  Does anyone have any tips or words of wisdom for me?

TIA!

  • My kids haven't been to the dentist yet. I think you're doing all you can by talking to him about the visit and preparing him for what's going to happen.

My son FLIPS OUT when he gets a haircut, so I can't even imagine trying to take him to the dentist.

Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised and he'll do great!

  • I think the best thing you can do is to remain calm, yourself.  Kids are crazy how they sense nervousness and other emotions from their parents, so if you are nonchalant, hopefully he will be too.

When I took Justin a couple of weeks ago, I was really worried how he would handle it, but they staff was great with him.  They explained what they were going to do before they did it so he knew what to expect.  I'm sure a pediatric dentist will be well-versed in all of that.

    I think he'll do great!

I'm pretty sure you were the one who reco'd the dentist DS goes to so I'm guessing you are going to the same office.  Everything and everyone about that place is wonderful......as you already know.  I sat in the chair and he sat on my lap for the exam.  That helped a ton.  The hygienist was willing to take off her mask when it freaked DS out and she let him see all the tools before they put them in his mouth.  Are you just going for a check-up?  There's not much the have to do.....more like just getting them used to everything.  Oh and they have chocolate toothpaste which is DS's favorite part!  When the dentist came in he played with DS on the floor for a few minutes with his treasure chest toy and that helped DS feel comfortable too.  So maybe you can talk up the treasure toys, the new toothbrush and the chocolate toothpaste!  Good luck!
