Trouble TTC

AF and Clomid question

Good morning Ladies,

I need help with a question or two. Last month was my first cycle with metformin and clomid. I needed provera first to get my period, because I have not gotten AF since sept of 2010.. i got of BCP in june prior to that. I only got AF in sept dut to provera again. My doc thought it would jump start it.

Anyway.. what my questions are: 1) I think that AF is coming :( either really soon or it is here. I have (TMI) brown spotting when I wipe, and i would consider it more than just spotting actually and it is getting worse as the days go on. in order to start taking clomid again i have to wait for the first real day with RED blood right? What if this is my period and I don't get red blood, for whatever reason??

2) could i also take this a good sign that I O'd? I never got my period because i didn't O. I have pcos. so if it is AF that would mean that I O'd on my own??? or could it be just the metformin making me regular??????

sorry for all the questions. I am just trying to get some things straight for this next cycle.

and no, i have not started charting yet, i plan on starting this cycle!

TIA for your help or thoughts!!!

Yes, they want to count cd1 as red flow.  I called my RE to set up cd3 u/s for second clomid/IUI cycle and told her "I started spotting on Saturday and it turned to red flow after 5pm so..."  And she replied "So Sunday was day one."  I'm having cd3 stuff today.  I really wanted to count Saturday as day one but they know best.

Since you've started spotting, wait another day or two to see if red flow starts before you start to worry if you'll only have the brown spotting.  Alot of women (me included) spot before AF fully starts.  Somtimes it can last for days.  But that being said - my period is always REALLY light.  I always concider spotting just to be when I wipe.  If enough leaks out to need even a light panty liner (and it's red) I start to count that as AF because since mine is so light there is only one day that I actually need a tampon.  So you may not gush, you might just trickle.  But if it's red and enough to need something to protect your undies I'd call that the start.

And yes, with the combo of met & clomid I'd say this is a good sign you O'd.  There are some that get a period even without O'ing but it's not all that common and since you don't get AF without meds...I'd take this as a good sign.

  • YaY!!! Thanks so much!!!

  • Hi. A couple weeks ago I had only brown/pink spotting and they also had me start a round of provera to get a good flow before I can begin Clomid. Good luck and hopefully it comes soon.

  • Hi, yes it is the first day of red blood.

P.s. If you were monitored midcycle with an ultrasound, you would know whether you O'd or not.  Sorry to be pushy about it, but true.  I hope at least they are going to check you for cysts before starting another cycle because it is very dangerous to take clomid with cysts.

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

Thanks for clarifying!  Maybe next time they can give you a trigger shot to make you ovulate?  Did you have any follicles at your mid-cycle monitoring?  They could also check your progesterone at 7dpo to see if you did indeed ovulate.
