Key Lime pie- safe?

Hey ladies!  I hate to bother everyone with another food inquiry, but I received a homemade key lime pie (which is the only bakery type sweet treat I really seem to enjoy) over the weekend.  Of course, I have been enjoying it!  What I did not realize (don't know what I was thinking) is that there are raw eggs in it.  I tried to do some research, and see that some recipes bake the eggs with the crust so that they are heated, some freeze it, some people claim that the lime does something to the raw eggs and actually makes them OK- I am so confused.  Although I can just set it aside and not consume anymore, I am wondering if this is something that I should be letting my doctor know that I did (since I've eaten a considerable amount).  I can't reverse what I did, but wasn't sure if anyone had any advice (about Key Lime pie eggs specifically, or if I should be letting my doctor know right away).  THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!  I really, really appreciate it!!

  • I think you should be fine. I eat cake batter and cookie dough all the time- Then again I like to live on the edge! You've been eating it, and I'm assuming you're not feeling ill at all. Eat the pie and enjoy yourself.

  • I think you are overthinking this. If you feel fine, I wouldn't worry.

  • I think you will be fine, it never really occurred to me, but its not something I would worry too much about.

  • The concern with raw foods is "food poisoning."  I would say with raw eggs the biggest concern would be salmonella which you would be feeling if you had been eating the pie all weekend. So if you are feeling fine then I would see no need to call your dr.

  • Hey gals!  Thank you so much for your quick responses.  I appreciate your feedback more than you know.  You've been oh so helpful.  I try not to overthink things, but I am so new to this (I swear I learn a million things a day I had no idea of even going into a "planned" pregnancy!!)... so I don't really realize what is "ok" all of the time and this scenario did cause me to wonder a bit.  I'm so glad you're here I thank you for your help!!

  • Im sure you will be fine, I would imagine if it was going to be a problem you would have felt sick by now...

I am a chef and 19 weeks preggo and would eat it just fine. They may have baked it, but if the eggs were raw the lime juice will cook it a bit, you are correct. I would live dangerously.

  • You do realize a lot of ice cream has raw eggs in it too, right?

  • I make key lime pie all the time, and you have to cook it for 30 minutes, I've never heard of it being made with raw eggs. PLUS, even if it was, the lime juice acts as some kind of cooking agent (like lemon juice does with ceviche).
