Taking away the binkie at 2. How bad is it?

We are taking the binkie away from Aerin on Sunday. She is full-on addicted.  I had stopped letting her have it during the day, but DH let her use it in the car a few times so that's out the window.  If it was up to Aerin, she would have one in her mouth and one on each finger 24x7.

How bad of a scream fest should we expect?  Also her and Alec share a room so I'm wondering if we should try and seperate them during this?

I don't know, we still haven't taken Tess's.  I'm hoping that the anticipation is going to be worse than the reality.  GL!

Ava was exactly the same way.  One wasn't enough, she had to have all 9 of them at the same time and was frantic if one were misplaced.

We used the NUK brand, so i created the NUK fairy.  I explained that there were babies that really needed them and that the NUK fairy would come and collect all of her NUKS and leave her a present in its place.  She happily collected all she had and put them in a bag.  That night was rough.  She cried for hours once she realized what she had done.  Took her about 2.5 hours to fall asleep.  But i didn't give in.  Each day got much better and by the 4th day, she was over it and no longer asked about them.  The NUK fairy did leave her a new Blabla doll.  She did try to give it back in the beginning to get her NUKS back, but once she figured out that they were gone, she got used to it very quickly.

She did find one in the couch weeks after that and happily gave it to me exclaiming that the fairy forgot one.  Whew!  She's so proud of herself that she constantly reminds her big brother of her accomplishment b/c at 5 years old, he STILL sucks his thumb and we've tried everything under the sun for that.

  • We've just started with Colton.  He is a one in the mouth double fisted kinda paci guy.

Yesterday we really hard.  We let him have it when in the car and going to bed.  Other than that just once when he was flipping out.  Today was better but I've kept him really busy.

We are going to let him have it for naps and bedtime, just stopping during the day, for the next few months.  Then we will take it all away.  :)

  • I don't have personal experience with this, but I think it's good you're doing it now.  I have two friends with boys who did not take it away until the kids were older (3.5).  As soon as they took away the paci, the boys both dropped their naps.  So I say good for you for doing it sooner rather than later.  Good luck!
