Messy Masterpieces FAIL :o(

So, I stole the idea that many of you posted (Jill, IHHM, etc) and did it with DH and DD for Mother's Day. It was fun!! But, as the paint dried it started cracking and peeling off of the canvas. This morning there are BIG cracks (2 inches) and it's pulling up. I meant to take a picture before leaving for work this morning, but I forgot. I used Crayola washable paint, which is what I thought was OK to use.

Any ideas of what I could/should do??

You ought to ask jessica too. She has done it. Did you prep the canvas at all? I think you usually need to put a coat of something on it first.

The original instructions say acrylic paint. Maybe that's it?

I would use acrylic paint. I did some canvasses a long time ago with acrylic and it worked out well.

We used Acrylic paint ( same as shown in the picture) and didn't have any issues.  I didn't treat the canvas with anything, just opened the paint and DS went to town.

Acrylic paint like the others said. If you want your letters/images to be crisp, cover everything (the whole canvas/letters) with a coat of white paint first. That will keep the other colors from bleeding through. If you are fine with the bleeding, then don't worry about a coat of white.

Shoot, I was worried it was the paint. I know Michelle mentioned she used the Crayola washable. I did do a coat of white first but stupidly bought washable for that too rather than acrylic.

So, at this point, can I peel it off and start again? Or, do I buy a new canvas? Is there some sort of clear coat I could apply to keep it stuck down and just use acrylic next time??

I did 2 of them with washable crayola kids paint, and they turned out fine. I didn't do anything to the canvas, but did paint over the letter first in white.    I linked the paint I used, got it at Michaels.

Weird! That's exactly the paint I used. When you painted over the letters, did you use the same paint (but white)?
