Hi Ladies. I don't post often, but I'm expecting mo/di twins and I'm 16.5 weeks along. I just got a call from my perinatologist that my NT scan results are slightly abnormal. Of course, I'm worried. Did anyone else have this happen? I heard that twin nt scans aren't very accurate, does anyone know if that's true? Any advice or insight is appreciated. Thanks.
Re: NT Scan Help
Hi there,
We had an abnormal NT scan as well. With identical twins, they are more concerned with twin to twin transfusion (ttts) than they are with chromosomal disorders, since technically they shouldn't be chromosomally different if they are identical.
Since that scan, though, we have had ZERO indications of ttts and have had a very normal ultrasounds and measurements. It's a hard test for twins because they can't rely on the bloodwork, only the fluid measurements, so it does skew the results.
Did they suggest an amnio or did they talk about ttts?
They didn't suggest either so far. I have an appt tomorrow (I already had that scheduled) and they will do a level 2 screening then.
Good luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes.
We did the amnio because they were so convinced due to our numbers that we had twin to twin transfusion, so they wanted to rule out chromosomal abnormalities in order to proceed if intervention was necessary. But, we've not had a need for any intervention, so the amnio might not have been necessary after all. I have no hindsight yet as I'm still going week to week and hoping ttts doesn't progress.
Be prepared to hear a lot of scary "what could be wrong" but take it all in and know and hope that there might be nothing wrong. Also DO NOT GOOGLE. It will not help and I'm pretty sure it is why I will need therapy for the rest of my life.
Feel free to PM me if you want to talk offline about any of it.
Ours was abnormal, not because of the nuchal fold, but because the difference in their sizes (non TTS related). We were told the blood test that they do with the NT for twins can be inaccurate. We did additional testing and everything was fine.
My friend with twins had an abnormal scan for nuchal folds. She did additional testing and both babies were perfect.
GL - I hope you get the same good results.
