We're thinking of taking a very last-minute vacation in June. Any recs for Hawaii with a toddler? We were thinking Kauai. I've never been to Hawaii before and have no clue where to stay, what to do...I'm imagining lots of time at the beach, pool, and some easy hikes?
Thanks!
Re: Hawaii recs?
We went to Kauai in November with N. We had a great time and stayed in a condo in Poipu right next to the Grand Hyatt. The beach there was perfect for littles and we were close to some easy hikes. We drove up the North shore (about a 90 minute drive) two days and it is definitley far more lush and tropical and there were good beaches for N, but not nearly as nice as Poipu beach.
I'll PM you the condo info, I think they're doing a May/June special. After this weekend's OR trip with N, the biggest travel advice I have for travellign with little kids is to get a suite! The condo is 2bed/2bath. It was perfect with N! He'd go to bed and we could still have grown up time.
I'm so jealous! We went to Kauai last August and it was beautiful! That island is very lush, and was really what I pictured when I think of Hawaii. When we went, we stayed at a condo in Princeville, which was nice because we had our own kitchen so we didn't have to eat out as much. There was an absolute gorgeous beach that you had to hike down to (I think called Hideaway beach) right before the fancy hotel in Princeville). Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Hanalei is a fun little town and has the best kalua pork plate lunch ever! It's a little trailer off the road.
We went on a gorgeous hike at Haena State Park. It's not the easiest hike by any means, but so very gorgeous and worth it! We took Court in an Ergo and hiked part of the trail (the trail is miles long and the full trail takes a few days to hike).
We didn't do too much on the other side of the island, except for check out Poku Dogs (a must if you like hot dogs).
When we stayed in August we chose the Princeville area because the tide was high on the other side, so you may want to check that out. When we went to Maui we stayed in an Outrigger hotel that had a kitchen and really liked the hotel and I believe there is atleast one on Kauai. If you google it you can pull up their website.
Oh man, now I so want to go back!
We went to Kauai for our honeymoon and had a great time. I highly recommend this book Kauai Revealed. We used it a ton and found all kinds of hidden treasures from food to beaches. I can't wait to go back we had the best time ever!

This was before a baby, but we went to Kauai and stayed at the Sheraton in Poipu. I have been to a couple of the other Hawaiian Islands and Kauai was by far the most "tropical" island. Someday when we go back, we'll go to Kauai again!
We went on a few hikes, but they were not easy hikes that you'd probably want to take a 1 year old with... I'm sure there are plenty that you will be able to go on though! We mainly had fun relaxing at the pool and beach at our hotel and did drive up to Princeville one day where we went to one of the Sheraton sister hotels ( I think there are a few on the island that if you stay at one, you can use the facilities/beaches at the others) and used their spa like pool and beach!
We ended up choosing to stay in Poipu because the time of year we went (April) we read that that area had the least amount of rain. DH and I took surfing lessons and had a blast! I think I liked it better than DH and it was something I'd never done before, but really fun!
Now you made me just start dreaming about a Hawaii trip! Hope you guys have fun!!!!
I second this recommendation; we went to Kauai last May and loved it. The Kauai Reveled book is a great guidebook. Secret beach is beautiful, it is a little bit of a hike but if you have a carrier it shouldn?t be too bad. Queens Bath was really neat, but I am not sure how great it would be with a really young one. The Napali trail is great, but it is a serious hike. If you guys are really into hiking and have a good carrier this trail has some beautiful views, just make just to bring a lot of water. The Island has some beautiful waterfalls, many of them you can drive to. If you ever go to Maui the Maui Reveled book is really good, especially for the Road to Hana.
