Toddler Luggage

Ok my seasoned traveler mommies....what kind of luggage do you have for your kids?  We're flying to Disney this fall and I want something the kids can pull and is small enough to carry on the plane.  But I also want it to be functional and last for a few years.  Recommendations?  Likes/Dislikes?  We've been looking at the Trunki ones, but not sure what folks think about them.

IMHO, I don't want the hassle of getting my kid to keep up with her own luggage. I've seen kids dragging bags through airports and it looks like such a pain for the parents!

Instead of luggage, consider a great backpack. Geneva has a tiny backpack that I fill with her plane goodies and snacks. For ease, everything else gets packed into two large suitcases. We've traveled a good bit with Geneva (including our Hawaii trip) and this seems to be the easiest way to get around.

I try to book our big trips on Delta because I got the Gold AmEx that lets all our bags fly free. That's worth every penny of the annual fee.

  • That's a really good point...I hadn't considered that we'd ultimately have to keep up with all the luggage.  Appreciate your perspective!

I still pack their stuff in with mine, or they share a suitcase and i check it.  Anything they need on a plane is in their backpacks.  Or are you trying to avoid checking bags?

I've never even seen this one...but haven't been looking either.

  • After our Hawaii trip where Gavin saw my niece pulling her little suitcase and he INSISTED on pulling his carseat/gogo through the airports, we bought him a little Mario backpack w/ handle and wheels.  This is good so that when he flakes out carrying it or wants in the stroller, we can wear it.  It was like $15-20 at Target.  It may have been a seasonal item but this is similar:

It's the perfect size for fitting under the seat on the plane so I usually fill it up w/ his blankie, lovie, change of clothes, toys, that kind of thing.  At least if this one wears out or breaks, I'm only out $20 and I go get him a new one in whatever theme he likes at that time.  As for the Trunki ones, I see more parents pulling them than kids so I'm not sure what that means. I pack both kids real clothes and stuff into a small regular suitcase and check that and DH and I always share a larger suitcase.  I don't believe in buying expensive luggage even for myself b/c it gets so beat up/dirty when travelling.  I buy American Tourister on clearance at Penneys Outlet and replace it every 2-3 years.  I'm due for a new set now.

I have 2 small suit cases that I pack for the girls.  They are small enough to bring on the plane as carry on.  I put a few change of clothes, swim suit and cover up, a few toiletries (toothbrush, hairbrush, hairbows, etc) and a few toys/games/books.  Ours have a small pocket in the front that makes for easy access if they want the toys on the plane without having to unzip the main part of the suitcase that has the packed clothes.

Similar to this Disney Princess Rolling Pilot Case.

Tess likes to drag it around but it also has backpack straps so I can throw it on my back if I need my hands free to hold on to her.

I might not have made it clear that I pack the majority of their stuff in with my suitcase but having them each have a seperate carryon helps with overflow from my big suitcase.  Plus, if it gives me peace of mind to know that if our luggage was lost we'd at least a change of clothes and swim suit on hand.

Emma's doesn't have the backpack straps on it but hers is still small enough that it will stack on top of the big suitcase if we end up having to carry it for her.

Even when we don't fly I have found out it is easier for us to have 4 smaller bags than load up one big honking heavy suitcase for the 3 of us + DH bag.

  • We have the Trunki ones, and they are great for pulling smaller kids in the airport.  It keeps my little guy occupied, and is easier than dealing with a stroller since we can skip the elevators.  However, they are not that big.  I just use one to pack his snacks/entertainment/toys for the plane.  I still pack all of his clothes in my suitcase.
  • Whatever you use, be prepared to have to carry for them after about 20 minutes.  The trunki looks cool, but doesn't appear to be an easy thing to throw on your shoulder or in a stroller when they get sick of carting it around.  We have a little mini backpack with straps and wheels.  Ava puts all her carry on stuff in it (books, snacks, small toys for the plane.) - but she usually wants nothing to do with it after the initial thrill has worn off.  So we can still hang it on our stroller or throw it under the stroller really easily.

As for the kids clothes, I just pack their stuff with mine to avoid paying another 25$ per person at this age.

  • I've been trying to find one for Owen too. My sister got him a penguin suitcase and backpack for Christmas but the wrong item was shipped and they are no longer carrying that one. I looked at the Trunki ones but they didn't have great reviews on Amazon and I just pictured Owen jumping off of it when he got tired of riding and running off somewhere. We usually still fly with a stroller anyway to keep him contained. I am leaning towards either a cheap small one for him to pull around or one of the hard side ones that will last longer. I can't make up my mind.

  • Late here...But I bought luggage for the girls for our Disney trip last year..and what a pain in the A$$ that was! We ended up with just too many things to carry ourselves.

My opinion is just have them or share one, or share with you a larger suitcase and use a small or backpack carryon for toys and maybe change of clothes for each. Pottery Barn has way cute backpacks for situations like this! Thats what my plan is! :)
