Pregnant after a Loss

What did you do?

I'm just arriving at O, but I'm hoping and praying for a BFP and sticky baby.

My question is, what did you do differently to try to increase your odds of keeping baby? I was thinking of trying to get in with my OB as soon as I get a BFP, but I have only lost one (at 5 weeks), so I don't even know what I could ask him to check/monitor. I know some ladies get Progesterone checked... but what else is there?

Thanks for your advice!

Re: What did you do?

  • I would definately have your Progesterone checked but as far as anything else I don't really know.  An ultrasound wouldn't show much at that point.  I would just make sure they keep up on tracking your beta's as well!

I don't know if it's the Progesterone this time around or not but I have officially made it farther with this pregnancy than my last which I m/c @ 5 weeks.  Before I was never on anything for progesterone nor did I have it checked.

    So that's a start anyways . . .

  • I am doing acupuncture, and there has been some research done to suggets that it can help prevent m/c that are not attributed to chromosomal abnormalities (in that case, it's out of your hands).  You can ask him to monitor your progesterone--if it's low, that can cause you to miscarry, and if you want some peace of mind, he can monitor your betas (hcg).  Make sure you to your prenatal/folic acid... other than that, there's not a lot you can do.

Aside from your prenatals, having your betas and progesterone check, I don't think there is much you can do. It is truly the one thing out of our control. Some of us are n different medication, but we have very specific reasons for being on those and you need to speak with the doctor before doing any of it.

  • We haven't done anything different. We were told our miscarriage was likely due to a problem with the embryo and since we haven't had multiple miscarriages we haven't had any testing done. Many people do get extra testing or need to for other reasons but after one miscarriage (and many doctors say even 2) you still have a really good chance of a healthy baby the next time around.

Definitely talk with your doctor about what is best in your specific situation, but know that chance are things will be fine this time around. Best of luck, hope you catch the BFP wave!

  • Once I got pregnant, the only thing I really did differently this pregnancy was worry.

A lot of the ladies here have their betas & progesterone checked right after a BFP.     More in depth testing isn't usually done until you've had multiple losses.  I truly hope you have the same experience I did after my early loss and are able to move over to PgAL relatively quickly.

To help up the chances of getting pregnant I charted & used OPKs while I was TTCAL.  Doing so helped me figure out my O date had shifted after the m/c and my LP had shortened (total cycle length hadn't changed at all).  Without that knowledge it probably would have taken me longer to move over to PgAL.

    Definitely wishing you the best.
