Cloth Diapering

Circumcision and CD

So we took a baby care basics yesterday and they were talking about circumcision care on NB boys and the instructor said to apply petroleum jelly on the area to prevent the diaper to stick to it, but I'm pretty sure you can use petroleum jelly with CD.I thought the solution might be the flushable liner but can you please tell me what you did to care for the circumcision to heal. Thanks a lot

Re: Circumcision and CD

  • You can't use petroleum with CDs unless you use a liner. You would need to use a fleece liner or something along those lines. The petroleum will go through a disposable liner and still get on the CD. When DS was born we got him circ'd but it wasn't for 2 or 3 days. The pedi said we didn't have to apply anything once DS was peeing regularly. By the time he was circ'd he was already peeing so we didn't apply anything. It healed quickly and since we didn't put anything on it it didn't do anything to our CDs.
  • Yes, a fleece or flushable liner works great while the circ heals.

You can also check with your pedi on how they do it.  Some methods, like the plastibell, don't require any vasoline because of the little plastic cap covering the head while it heals.

We used sposies while the circumscision healed.  The urologist wanted us to put a vat of vaseline on his penis with each diaper change.  We had flushable liners but they tended to move and bunch up in the diaper and I did not want to take the chance of ruining my stash.

DS's aftercare instructions were to use Neosporin on a piece of gauze. We did that, and had no problems with his diapers.

Another option is not to circ at all... Smile

  • We used sposies.  But his circ got infected and we had to use an antibiotic for a while.  At that point we were already in CDs so we just used a liner.  You put gauze on the circ, too, which should act as a barrier, but I was always worried about the gauze moving around and the jelly getting on his diaper anyway.
  • you can also use cj's butter instead of vaseline and it's CD safe.

  • I would use a liner but you can also get Alba Unpetroleum Jelly which is very similar to Vaseline but cd safe.  I've gotten it at Whole Foods and other health food stores.
