Hi, all!
I'm not yet pregnant, but trying, and have discussed names at length with DH. Here is my baby name vent:
My dear late grandfather's name was Edward, as is my uncle's. Dh's name is also Edward, as is his grandfather and uncle as well. It's a long time family name on both sides, through several generations.
Edward is 100% going to be the first name, assuming we are blessed with a son.
Now for the middle name, I wanted to use my little brother's name: Jacob. My little brother is a complete clown, he makes me laugh ALL the time, and cheers me up all the time, and I just adore him. It's so important to me to honor him somehow.... but this would lead to:
EDWARD JACOB
Damn you Stephanie Meyers, Damn you.
Anyone else have their baby name ruined by pop culture?
Re: Damn you Twilight!!
Aww that stinks! I agree, I used to like Isobel/Isabelle, with a nickname of Izzy, but now it's WAY too popular.
My other names weren't ruined by pop culture, but I still won't be able to use them. I have planned for years to name my kids David and Claire, but I married a David Clary. Sigh.
Our son's name is Hank, and our last name has a double o sound in it ending with an -ey. So, he ends up with a name like Hank Moody. NOT A NAMESAKE I was hoping for. Oh well... I do like David Duchovny.
I just don't want my son to grow up to be anything like the character from Californication...
I agree with this completely.
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

I agree! I'm annoyed bc I like Kellan and Cullen, which scream Twilight.
Our first choice for a name was Cedric, but every time we told someone the name they gushed, "Ooooooh! Like in Harry Potter?!?!" We decided we couldn't give a kid a name that would make everyone ask him if his parents were HP freaks for the rest of his life (also, we have a common last name and feared that with all the HP fans growing up and having babies, Cedric might become more popular and then DS would end up with someone at his school with the same first AND last name).
So, we went with our second choice: Severin. Yeah.... neither of us have read the books (and at the time we hadn't seen any of the movies). We didn't know about Severus Snipe, and everyone still thinks we named our kid after Harry Potter (even though Severin is a different name).
I have also always loved the name Hermione for a girl, and now that's basically impossible.
Damn you, JK Rowling.
I personally LOVE IT!! Im a twilight fan (or a twidiot as my DF calls us) and I think its great!
We love the name jacob (we'd spell it Jaykob) but DSD is Jaylin, and we call her Jay for short and 2 of my brothers are Jay for short so adding another Jay is not a good idea!
I think my top boy name is pretty popular, but I woudnt change it!!
I think GREAT CHOICE!!!
ITA. It would be different if we were talking about Esme, which I don't think many people had heard before the books were written.
Jess & Adam, married 2009, precious Audrey born in 2011. BFP 1/6/13, 6-wk MMC discovered at 9 wks 2/11/13. D&C 2/18/13, second D&C 4/23/13 for retained placenta.
BFP 8/24/13!! EDD 5/1/14, delivered healthy and sweet Zoey Leanne on 5/5/14 by repeat c-section.
Our girl name choice is Esme. We don't mind the Twilight association, but we're about to start telling people, "Yes we got it from Twilight" even though we got it from a JD Salinger story. So I can see how that can get annoying!
Note: I like Twilight, just not enough to name my kid (directly) after a character, ya know?

BLOG.
We named DD Kaylee, we heard the name from Firefly/Serenity. While she wasn't named after the character, it's where we heard the name.
I think there is a difference in naming your kid after a character and hearing a name you like from a character.
I think the one somewhat nice think about Twilight, except for Bella (and sometimes Jacob), everyone went by their full name. Edward was always an Edward, so you may consider a NN to your son, Eddie? E.J.?
Once your son is an adult no one will probably remember Twilight much.
Agreed! Use it, it's lovely!
I wholeheartedly agree with this. Let's face it, 99% of people get the idea for their names from somewhere (unless they are 100% made up, and that's a whole 'nother topic). Whether you first hear the name in conversation, a baby name book, on a message board or in a movie, there's something that clicks when you hear it and you think "oh, I like the way that sounds." It doesn't mean you're so obsessed with a particular character or celebrity or whatever that you're naming your kid AFTER them... well, for most people it doesn't.

Just keep swimming.
I agree with the PP's that they are classic enough to survive. And they have such a strong family tie that you should go for it, in 10 years Twilight wont be popular anymore.
I like the name Cullen and Kellan too!! My DH is Irish and I would have loved to use one of those names but our last name is Mullen, so it didnt go together well.
