So what do you think of this?

My neighbor just went to the store to buy wine (about a 15 minute max round trip) and left her 5 year old home alone.  I am on my front porch and offered to watch him.  I have DS outside playing, she said he is fine watching TV.  Her house is 20 feet from mine, and she knows I am outside.

Thoughts?

  • Could be worse, but I wouldn't do it.

  • That's pretty bad. Even in 15 minutes a 5 y/o can get into a dangerous situation that a neighbor won't notice.

  • I wouldn't do it, but depending on the kid eh, it might be sort-of okay. Still pushing it though...

If my neighbors were outside though I'd totally ask if my 5 year old could hang out in the yard with them for 10-15 minutes while I ran down to the corner and back.

  • I say no way.  It only takes a second or two before a kid can get themselves into trouble.  I say leave the kid with the neighbor or bring the kid with you.
  • I have been so tempted so many times when my DS has been off school and I needed to pick up or drop off DD at preschool down the street.  My ILs even live in my house so technically, my DS could get them if he needed them.  But, I always let them know that I'm gone and so they can at least keep an ear out for him.

  • Nope.  Kid would have to go outside OR neighbor would have to go inside.  And I'm not even sure why as there are times that my kids are outside and I'm not with them.  So I guess inside, watching TV, is less of a danger?!?!

At any rate, I can tell you that I wouldn't be comfortable doing it.  I would be tempted -- really tempted.  But I still wouldn't do it.

  • No.  She could have easily brought the kid with her.  My kid is 9 and we don't leave him home alone.

  • could not imagine leaving my 5yo home alone.  Scary and not okay.
  • 5yr old is too young to be left alone.  Doesn't matter for how long.  It was very nice of you to offer to watch their kid but it was irresponsible of her to leave her very young child alone in her house while she went to get alcohol.
  • I'm having anxiety just thinking about this!!!!!!!! No way, not ever. What else does that lady do that we don't know about?
  • Not cool!

Are you sure no one else is in the house?  I can't imagine anyone thinking this is okay.
