Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Almost 11 months old and only drinking 12-16 oz of formula

DD will be 11 months in a week and this week there has been a huge drop in her formula intake. At her 9 month appt our pedi said when DD is ready, she will start drinking less and going from 24-30 oz a day to 16-20 oz a day. This week has ranged from 12-16 oz a day, which included using formula to make cereal because DD wouldn't drink much, but would eat the cereal. DD got 4 new teeth in the past 2 weeks and I think maybe that's why she doesn't want to drink much, but I'm wondering if I should worry about the days she only gets 12 oz. Anyone else have a LO that dropped to less than 16 oz at this age? Sorry for the format, on an iPad.

I haven't experienced this, but try to not worry too much.  Is she still having enough wet diapers?  If so, then she's fine.

I've heard they don't like the bottle when teething because the sucking motion hurts.

if she's teething then i'd probably attribute the lower amount of formula to that.  my DS eats 16-22ish oz a day, sometimes the 16 oz is a struggle to get into him.  now since he's older (11 months next week also), i don't worry about it as much, if he keeps it up i may try a little whole milk mixed with his formula to see how he likes it and just start the transition then.  GL and try not to worry too much :)

  • Just before Aiden turned 11 months we were at the pedi for a sick visit and I mentioned that I was worried about him sometimes only taking 12 or so ounces.  She told me that at almost a year they're looking for babies to be taking 10 ounces or more and some babies just drink less.

  • Our pedi says that by 9 months they should be taking about 20 oz a day and that it will start to decline as they get closer to 1.  So, I wouldn't worry. For 11 months that sounds like your LO is on track. As for the days when she only takes 12 oz, some days we're just less thirsty/hungry than others. Do you give her any other liquids? I offer my DD water a few times a day and she usually takes about 2 oz of water a day.
  • This never happened with DS#1.  He always drank tons of formula until we switched to regular milk.  With DS#2 though, it's been several weeks now that he hasn't had much interest in formula at all.  I am lucky if we get 8oz in him!

Just letting you know you're not alone :-)

  • Yep...DD is almost 10 months and she's already dropped down to this amount.  We're lucky if we can get 16 oz in her each day.
