I have a few questions. We have been BF only since DS was a few days old. (We had to supplement in the hospital for 2 days until my milk came in.) DS has been sptting up with every feeding lately. I'm not sure if I need to worry about it or not. Sometimes it is a lot and it is with every feeding. I plan on asking the doctor at his one month check up, but that's not until the 12th. Should I be worried about this? Or do some babies just spit up all the time? (sometimes its projectile though)
My second question is about bottles. DS had bottles the first few days of his life. Then once my milk came in and he was more awake, we stopped the bottles. How often is it ok to give DS a bottle of pumped milk (DH feeds it to him). Is a bottle every few days ok? Or is that too much at this point? I go back to work in about 5 weeks and DS will be getting bottles of pumped milk while I am gone.
Re: Few ?s: sptting up when BF & bottles
I had issues with spit up. You should do more burping in between feeding. Take him off the breast and burp him after the first few minutes and then again when he's done with that side. Adjust as needed. My LO likes to gulp the milk down, so i tend to burp her more often.
For bottles, my husband feeds her a bottle of expressed milk once a day. It gives me a break and gives them daddy/daughter time. I haven't had any problems with nipple confusion and we've been doing that since week 1.
My LO spit up pretty frequently at 1st which, for her, went away over time.
I had to pump to supplement the BFg beginning at 5 days of age and I never had any problems w/ nipple confusion. When the need to supplement was over she would get a bottle a few times a week and we had no problems going between BFg and bottle feeding. The only thing I did find was that she ate the bottle so quickly that it didn't satisfy her desire to suck so she would want the pacifier for a bit after the bottle.
Now, I'm sort of having the opposite problem. She wasn't given a bottle for about 3 months, because there was no need for it and now she refuses bottles. So, at least for us, there may be something to keeping the bottle familiar.
Some babies just spit up a lot. It's an issue though when it's projectile, then it's considered throwing up, not spitting up. I would definitely ask your pedi. Hopefully nothing is wrong and your LO will be considered a "happy spitter", lol.
I think giving the bottle at this point is totally fine. We waited a little longer than you and it was hard getting her to take it at all. By now you shouldn't have a problem with nipple confusion.
