I just had my 38 week appointment. My bp is normally fluctuates between 90-105 / 60-70. Today it was 137/95 which the doc said was still in the normal range so she wasn't concerned. I'm not all that concerned b/c the doc said it was OK and there was no protein in my urine. I was just curious if blood pressure normally goes up when you have really bad swelling?
Re: does swelling generally cause bp to rise?
My understanding is that it is just the opposite. The higher bp causes the extra swelling. Make sure you are staying hydrated as lack of hydration can cause bp to rise and swelling to go up. I had one day of higher bp for my first appointment. I blamed it on coffee and running late. Since then no troubles. Though last appointment I as admonished for having elevated bp only to find it was 120/80. I think my doc was having a cruddy day as he also complained about my weight.
Actually, it works the other way around. Sometimes swelling can be a sign of elevated blood pressure, which can be a sign of Pre-E. I've had some serious swelling in my feet and lower legs, but my bp is good too, so they are not worried.
Just try to drink lots of water, try to stay away from processed foods/foods with "hidden" salt, make sure you're eating enough protein (you need 70-80g/day), and rest with your feet up.
My MFM says to call when mine goes over 140/90.....they are monitoring me for pre-e
Higher BP/Pre-e can cause swelling. Not swelling causing high BP.
