Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone ever had a cyst surgically removed?

Not good news from the RE today.  My cyst has not gone down, it is still 13cm.  So, I need to get an MRI and then have surgery to remove it.  Good news is the right ovary looks great, doesn't have a polycystic appearance right now and he thinks the cyst is likely impacting my fertility.

Unfortunately, he told me the surgery risks removal of the entire ovary, and with mine being so large, he thinks that is possible.  He also said scar tissue can become an issue.

Wondering if any of you had a surgical removal before and/or could provide me with additional info, like whether I need a second opinion.

Not the news I wanted, but my head is up and I will forge on.

  • 13cm is quite large.  I would think the risks of torsion would be worse at this point that the risks associated with surgery.  I have had three complex ovarian cysts removed.  My most recent surgery was November of 2010.  Good luck to you!  I'm sorry you have to deal with one of these sucky things!

Thanks BBJ.  Any details on the surgery, incisions, length of time, etc?  The doc didn't get into it as he said he wants to the see the mRI and then we will have a detailed meeting...urgh...thanks for any help!

My last surgery was supposed to take 45 minutes, but it took two hours due to large amounts of adhesions they found when they got in there.  They weren't sure if the adhesions were due to my endometriosis or the previous surgeries, but I think we were leaning towards the three previous laps I had.  I really did have a lot of relief after I healed from the surgery.  The gas that they use in your tummy during the surgery is what caused the most pain for me after surgery.  I was pretty sore for about a week.  Then I started feeling better pretty quickly.  I had three small incisions.  Well, she went in through my belly button so that it wouldn't leave another scar.  Then, I had one very small incision on each side of my lower abdomen.  Hope that info helps!

  • Hi,

I've never had one removed myself, but my sister has had 6 surgeries to have cysts removed. Each surgery varied a little, but her recovery time was pretty quick. She has endo, so she was having that removed and the cysts as well.

good luck, I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

  • Let me begin by saying that I am so very sorry to hear this news.  This is such a tough thing to have to deal with.

I had an 18.9*10.2*18.3 cyst removed almost 6 years ago, but it was not done laparascopically.  I have about a 7-inch-long scar in my abdomen.  I don't remember how long the surgery took, but my right fallopian tube was kind of "tied up" in the cyst, too.  I lost the cyst (which weighed 4.5 pounds), but I also lost my right fallopian tube and 20% of my right ovary.  I was in the hospital for two nights and the rest of the recovery (at home) took me a couple of weeks to be fully back to "normal."

I don't think you need a second opinion, necessarily, but I would ask that they not take anything that is not ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to take.  If you have any other questions, please feel free to PM me.  I am happy to help in any way I can.

  • I had a cyst removed that they said was the size of a grapefruit.  One day I was just having crazy pain in my abdomen, I thought maybe my appendix had burst, but I went to the ER and it was a cyst that was twisting my ovary.  They took it out right then, and I had the option to go home that night, so I took it.  I wanted to be comfortable at home instead.  I was really hurting the first week, barely able to sit up on my own, but it got better very quickly after that.  I'd say I was 100% by 6 weeks.  Maybe 50% by 2 weeks.  I have about a 6 in scar on my abdomen, but it's so far down, you would never see it.  it's right at the hairline.  They said they may have to take my ovary, but ended up being able to save it, which is great.  I hope everything goes well for you, good luck!!

Thanks so much for the information.  Also, comforting to see you've had 3 kids :)  The doc today kept saying - your right ovary looks great, it only takes one, etc.  That really made me think he anticipates needing to take the ovary (although he only said it was a possibility). I'll know more after the MRI and will confirm everything with a 2nd opinion!  Thanks again.
