How do you meet your neighbors?

We moved into our house a year ago, but only really "know" the neighbors directly next door to us and one across the street.

Yesterday, I took a walk around the neighborhood and for the first time I realized how many younger families live around us. I saw at least 3 other moms taking walks with their babies/kids.

How do you meet other moms/neighbors without being weird about it?

  • Just from being out and about!  We only really know 2 of our neighbors right now 3 if you include my husband's ex-boss who moved his mother in next door.  All the other houses were foreclosed on near us and were either rented out or whoever bought them never stayed in them long.  Sad state of affairs but that's a story for another time.

  • My DH is involved with local politics so we know some people on our street or in our neighborhood from that.  Others we met when we moved in or when we had a baby.  People love to meet new babies!

In our old house, we organized a street party and got to know a lot of people through that.

  • We got lucky when we moved into our house about 3 years ago.  There are about 20 houses on our street, and all but a few of them have kids that are pretty young.  We're the youngest by a couple years, but they're all close enough in age to us that we get along really well.  Most of them are also couples who like to be outside, hanging out while our kids play in the cul-de-sac.  There's only one other 2 year old for Noah to play with, but even the 8 year olds let him join in.

We have a neighborhood supper club, once a month we go out without kids.  We have a street crawl every year.  There's a theme every year and a group of 3 or 4 couples hosts at one of their houses, and you go house to house having food/drinks that go along with the theme.  We also have a pool party and Christmas party every year.

  • We are in the same boat.  I am *thinking* about organizing a "back to school" block party at the end of the summer.  In my old neighborhood, twice during the summer, everyone would get together and get to know eachother.  Once was a pie social and everyone brought a pie, and the other was an ice cream social.  I'm thinking of sending out flyers and renting a big bouncy house for all the kids and recruiting the neighbors we do know to grill hamburgers and hot dogs.  Fingers crossed...

  • About 6 months after we moved in, we organized a block party. Everyone loved it, and it has now become an annual thing that all the neighbors look forward to. We are on year five. One of the other neighbors has since organized an annual cookie exchange at Christmas time.
  • We don't. We've lived here for almost 3 years and we don't know our neighbors. FWIW, from what I can tell, everyone in our neighborhood is 20+ years older than us. I feel bad that we are so isolated but I don't think anyone in our neighborhood is really into being neighborly.
