DB got a new job -- child support question

DB got a new job. Of course he won't tell me what company it's for because he knows I'll tell the Friend of the Court and have wage garnishment set up. He's supposed to report it to the courts when his job/income changes, but I know he won't. Is there anything I can do even though I have no idea who his employer is or how much he's making?

I don't care about the dollar amount of CS changing, I just want him to be held accountable for paying (or not paying, which has been the case).

  • How is it set up now?

When STBXH left his job where he was being wage garnished, the state started sending him the bill directly. He didn't pay for two months, then he got a collection notice, then he had to go to court for a contempt hearing. He is now self-employed, so the bill still goes to him, but he has been a little better about paying it.

I would notify the court that he changed employers, but that you don't have the info. See if there's anything they can do.

  • Federal law requires employers to report new employees in Michigan to the Michigan New Hires Operation Center. They will let CS know the new info so they can have the company set up the garnishment.

Wow, that's interesting. And good news for OP. Looks like he actually hurt himself by changing jobs, where he probably thought he was going to get away with something.

Yeah, Ohio is similar. This is from their website:

Why do we need new hire reporting?

New hire reporting speeds up the child support income withholding order process, expedites collection of child support from parents who change jobs frequently, and quickly locates alleged fathers/non-custodial parents to help in establishing paternity and child support orders. New hire reporting helps children receive the support they deserve. New hire reporting also saves taxpayers by preventing fraud in welfare, workers compensation and unemployment compensation. Employers are a key partner in ensuring financial stability for many children and families and should take pride in their role.

Same thing in PA.  My ex changes jobs every 3-4 months to try and stay ahead of the wage garnishment that happens everytime he uses his SS# as a new hire.  He stopped trying to work under the table b/c I got him and that employer in trouble w/ the law and trying to evade taxes.  My ex may be dumb but eventually he learned the stove was hot so to stop pissing me off and I'd stop raising CS.

  • Is there a way to tell which states have this program? I can see my soon to be ex doing the same thing. He did it with his ex where he wouldn't tell her where he worked and even told the courts he wasn't working.
