For those who BF...

If you tandem and then switch sides mid feed, is it necessary to wash yourself between babies? This may be a really dumb question but they don't share their bottles so it seems weird that it is ok that they share the boob.

Re: For those who BF...

  • I don't switch sides mid feed, but if I did, I wouldn't wash. The milk has enough antibodies to keep things clean
  • I didn't tandem much, but I had this question too the first time one got sick. I didn't ever wash. But then again they were apt to share bottles, toys, etc, and I kinda figured they were probably both going to get sick at some point, so I didn't stress about it.

  • I tandem but never switch sides midfeed. Is there a reason why you do this? I assigned a baby to a breast for the day and then would switch it the next day. If I did switch midfeed, I wouldn't wash. They're sharing everything anyway and BFing is already hard and time consuming enough :)

This.  Why are you switching mid-feed?  I didn't assign a breast for the day, I just rotated which side every feeding.  I had one breast that produced more.

I don't always switch but will occasionally because one of my guys often passes out mid feed and I need to top him up with a bottle afterwards (he is still getting the hang of bf). If my stronger nurser is still hungry I let him "finish" on the side his brother started on.

  • I switched every feeding, but never mid-feed.  I never washed, either.  DS and I had thrush for awhile, and DD never got it even with my not washing.

    this.

Can I ask why you switch sides in between feeds? Why not just switch every feed or every day?

They will still get all they need from one boob and it's a lot less work that way.

I blockfeed my babies. DS is always on the left, DD is always on the right. I never switch them. Keeps me sane :)

ETA: n/m I just read your post above. that makes sense...
