Question about metformin

Hi Ladies,

So.. My Doc has me on Metformin and clomid. Right now I am post O and playng the waiting game. Anyway, what my question is If it turns out that I am not PG is metformin supposed to regulate my hormones and i will get my period? (i have pcos) Does this take a couple of months to happen? ( I have been taking metformin since March) Does it happen to some woman and not all? Or does the dosage go up until I get my period with it and not need the provera anymore to bring on my period.

Sorry for all the questions in one! I have read a lot on metformin and what it does for woman, and I am curious if it is SUPPOSED to bring your period for most woman.

Thanks!

Re: Question about metformin

  • I have been on metformin for about 4/5 months and it never regulated my cycle. That was the doctor's hope, but it has yet to happen.  I take 2000mg of it every night before I go to bed.  I have also been on clomid..50 mg and 100 mg with no response.  My next step is to try femara and see if I have any response with that.  They told me to continue taking my metformin with everything else.  I have PCOS as well.  I always have to take provera to get my period...maybe you will have more luck than me and start getting your own period, but I just wanted to let you know that I have been on metformin for quite awhile and it didn't help me.   Good luck!

  • I have been on metformin for what seems like forever! It did regulate my cycles, it took a few months. By regulate I still was having 35-40 cycles with occasional annovulation. You might still need provera. Good Luck! PCOS sucks!

I don't know how they decide who gets what dosage.  Because for us with diabetes it's based (*I think*) off your A1C blood levels but no clue for PCOS.  But I really doubt your doc will just keep up'ing your dosage until you get AF.  But Met, anything you're looking for - - - getting your system used to the dosage, help with hormones in balance, weightloss, etc. will all take a little time.  I know hearing me say *again* that this will take some patience is annoying.  (I have no patience myself so trust me, I know).  But it will just be a little "Wait and see".  It is for everyone.

  • If the clomid worked and you O'd, you'll likely get your period regardless of whether the Met has started working.  Usually with PCOS the reason we don't get a period is because we don't ovulate, so we never get the surge/plummet of hormones needed to bring AF.  If the clomid balanced your hormones enough to make you O, you'll likely get the rise of progesterone and the fall, which will bring on AF.
