Breastfeeding

Does BF-ing make anyone else depressed?

Whenever I nurse or pump, I always get these waves of sadness and depression that wash over me. This happened with my first son, so I was a little more prepared for it, but I'm disappointed that it's happening again. Whatever hormones are released by BF-ing are obviously making me depressed, but I'm determined to give DS2 breastmilk for at least his first 6 weeks -- 3 weeks to go!

Does this happen to anyone else?

  • The same ting happened to me, but it was more anxiety and sadness for about 15 seconds before my letdown. The website really helped, as well as knowing that it was just something that happened, and not that I was depressed in any way, it was just the drop in dopamine.

I would eat some chocolate before nursing (since it's supposed to up your dopamine), and try to get some sun and eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can.

Now, at four months, it almost never happens anymore, and nursing is a way nicer experience!

thank you so much for posting this! I've been BFing for almost 6 months and had no idea that the anxiety I was feeling is normal and I'm not the only one!
