When & how did you transition DC #1 to big bed?

And how did it go?  I'd really like to avoid getting a 2nd crib when # 2 comes along.  DD will be about 22 months at that time.  Thanks!

No advice since my oldest is still in a crib, but at 22 months he wouldn't have been ready.  I suggest getting a second crib.  It was/is so nice to have my oldest "caged in" when #2 came.  He hasn't tried to climb out which has helped us make this decision.

However, we won't be buying a 3rd crib so my DS will make the transition in the next few months.  He is 2.5 and will have to be out before he is 3:)

  • My son will be 21 months when the new baby arrives.  We did not want to buy a second crib so we decided to transition him to a bed sooner rather than later.  He has been in a regular size bed for the past 5 weeks.  He has been doing just fine.  My husband slept on the floor in his room for the first week or so just to make sure he didnt have any problems with the new bed.  In the past 5 weeks he has only gotten out of bed 3 times on his own and he has walked right into our room to wake me up.  I think he is doing great with everything especially for just being 15 months.  I am really happy with our decision rather than having to buy a second crib that would not be used for very long.

  • We transitioned DS1 to a big boy bed at 21 months (2 months before DS2 was due).  We took our time and didn't push it.  Since he is in daycare during the day, we started with bedtime.  We kept his evening routine the same, but we would do books in his new bed/room.  We did that for about a week or so, then we started adding things in (pj's in his new room, then books, etc).  When it was time for bed, we would give him a choice of where he wanted to sleep.  He would choose his crib everytime.

After a couple of weeks, we started nudging him a bit to try to go down in his big boy bed.  I'd lay him down in his bed and pat his back, but when he pitched too much of a fuss, we'd go back to the crib.  Each night, I'd try to push him a little further.  One night, he fussed like usual, but then gave up and laid down after about 2 minutes.

From there, he's never looked back.  We had a few weeks where we would sit in his room to make sure he stayed in bed and we gradually got to the point where we walked out while he was still awake.  These days, I say goodnight, give him a kiss and walk out.  Every once in a blue moon he gets out of bed and tries to play with his books in his room (we don't keep any toys in his room), but I go back in and lay him back down and that is the end of it.

Honestly, I really wasn't sure that he was ready for a big boy bed, but he did amazingly well.  Good luck!

  • We just did on Sunday, DD is 2.5.

It went really really well.  We pumped it up for her, and explained that she could only use the big girl bed if she followed the "big girl bed rules":

    1. keep your eyes closed

    2. Keep your body still

    3. Stay in bed

    4. Be quiet

It's actually fun for her, each time I put her in bed, she asks to hear the "rules" again.  I'll start them off, and she'll finish them for me.  KNOCK ON WOOD, she has yet to get out of bed, in fact, she's been sleeping longer and I've been having to go and wake her up.  Not sure if it's just a coincidence though.  Good luck!

  • I did it about a month ago and DD is just over 13 months. Disclaimer she is in a very low toddler bed. My uncle, aunt and cousin bought the bed for DD's birthday. She did very well. She just started getting out of the bed on her own (her feet can touch the floor when she's sitting on the edge of the bed). I did it cold turkey. Good Luck!

  • DD1 was 26 months. She did really well and she never gets up until I come get her in the morning. We thought having her out of the crib would keep her from waking us up to retrieve a pacifier dropped out of bed. No such luck. She still calls us to get it because she isn't supposed to get up (we never told her that, she just doesn't gets up on her own. for now...)

No way she would have been ready when DD2 was born; she was only 14.5 months then. I liked having her contained and it was one less thing to worry about with a new baby keeping me busy.
