sleep

DS keeps waking up earlier and earlier, despite when he goes to bed....we have put window tint on his windows because we thought it was the light but I am beginning to think it is because his room is right under our shower, and DH gets in every morning before DS is awake...do you think this is somehting a noise machine may help....if so which one do you recommend that won't break the bank??

any other suggestions??

Re: sleep

  • It could help. We don't have a noise machine per se, but we turn on either a small space heater or fan in his room, depending on the weather. Both of them produce enough "white noise" to drown out other sounds.

  • Loading the player...
  • he does listen to music all night but maybe he needs more noise than music.....
  • I would definitely try some white noise. C has either a humidifier or small fan going in his room, depending on the weather. His crib actually shares a wall with our shower, and he doesn't seem phased by it (although, I think he tends to be a heavy sleeper - I often go in his room multiple times after he goes to bed, to put laundry away and whatnot, and he rarely stirs).
  • We've been having this problem for the last week or so... DS used to sleep from about 7:30pm - 7/7:30am.  Lately, we put him down at 7:30 and he just plays for 30-40m before going to bed.  And, he's waking up at 6:30am or earlier. NOT cool. We have blackout shades in there, and we've had a white noise machine for most of his life, so I can't figure out what the problem is.  But I know I'm TIRED!

  • DS goes back and forth with the early wake ups...today it was 5:20...and he is clearly DONE sleeping. He wakes up happy and content, and he's gotten 10 hours, then does a 2.5 hour nap...but man, 5:20 is early!

We do have a noise machine that I LOVE, we got ours at Bed, Bath, and Beyond but here is a link on Amazon:

Not sure if it will help with the early wakeups, because clearly it doesn't help a ton for us with that, but I do think it helps filter out some other house noises. We just use it on the rain setting.

    Good luck!

  • DD has days/weeks where she wakes up earlier but then she goes back to her regular time.  We use an air purifier in her room for white noise.

    Dear Use,

WORD. HBug used to be a wonderfully late sleeper -- and I appreciated it, and knew that it was unusual. I would have to WAKE her at 830 or 9.

Right up until last week, when she decided she needed to be up at 7. Which is fine -- while I don't like it that early, it lets us get our day started and do more activities and errands. I tend to go to bed between 1-2, so I am fine just adjusting my bedtime earlier (which, I, uh, havent done yet...). The other mornig she woke up at 4:45. DUB.TEE.EFF. And then BOYCOTTED HER NAP. This book was very appropriate for my attitude that morning.

  • Another thought: Do you think he's getting enough sleep? Does he seem more tired during the day? Some days my LO just wakes up extra early. He usually gets up any time between 5:30-6:30 am, but today it was closer to 5:00. No rhyme or reason to it.

  • I think the shower is a definite possibility. In the morning, sometimes I want to go upstairs to the office which is adjacent to DD's room but I don't because I know that the creaks in the hardwood floor will get her up if I walk by. In the morning she sort of tosses and turns a bit and takes her time waking up but if she hears one of us, she immediately starts calling for us. So, it may be that the shower is triggering him that you all are awake.

As far as white noise, someone on the board suggested to me to get a white noise CD. I bought a 60 minute white noise MP3 from Amazon for 99 cents and I put it in the boom box in DD's room on repeat so that it runs all night. It's been working well.

We are dealing with the exact same thing right now. Well, not *exact* - J never slept later than 6:30-7. But lately he's been waking up more like 5:30-6:00. Luckily he is willing to stay in his crib and amuse himself for a while, but still. I'm worried about him not getting enough sleep. Ugh.

Just a note about this noise machine.  I wouldn't recommend getting your LO used the projection of it if you buy this machine.  We have gone through about 6 of these (we just keep returning them to BB&B).  The projection part of the machine only lasts a couple of months before breaking.

  • We are in the exact same situation as useonfire...he used to sleeep from 7p-7-730 am right to sleep...now he sometimes takes 30 mintues to fall asleep...not fussying, just laying around etc.  he takes 1 nap a day usually from 1230-330.  maybe i will try that white noise cd.....we already have a cd player in his room, maybe if i make it louder and put the white noise on.....

    thanks ladies

  • It seems like a lot of us are dealing with the same thing!! I am wondering if it's the fact that the sun rises super early lately  (6am?) and our kids KNOW that somehow.  I cannot figure this out. I've been having trouble sleeping lately myself... I seem to be waking up at 6:30am regardless of what time I am going to bed.  Guess I am regressing to Liam's age...

Kewlie - I just added that to my pre-order list on Amazon last week! ha!

I'm in this club also. DD used to sleep from 7-7, with one nap of about 1.5 hours. Now she goes down at 7, can take up to an hour to fall asleep (but is quiet the whole time), and wakes up at 6. Her nap seems to be getting shorter too (an hour), and I'm worried about the amount of sleep she's getting. Ugh.

We have this machine too and the projection part constantly breaks.  It works for like six weeks, is broken for six weeks (when it is "broken", it still projects an image onto the wall, it just doesn't rotate.  DD still likes it on even when broken).  Then lo and behold, one day it will just randomly start working again...usually right when I am ready to ship it back to Homedics for a replacement.

We have another Homedics sound machine for DS' room without the projector that we bought at Bed Bath and Beyond, and it works great.  I think it might have been $30.
