2nd Trimester

Sleepy in 2nd trimester

Hi everyone-

I have read that the 1st and 3rd trimesters are when you can expect to be the most sleepy/tired during pregnancy.  I was very sleepy from weeks 4-10, and now I'm in my 20th week and for the last week or so I have been VERY sleepy again- I'm sleeping about 16 hours a day.  I know the it has to be from pregnancy because normally I do not sleep this much.  I exercise and eat well.  Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks!

Re: Sleepy in 2nd trimester

  • Sometimes I will sleep 10 or 11 hours, but I have to wake up to pee a couple times and it takes me a while to fall back asleep. I've been getting sleepy this week and I took a 3 hour nap today. It's biting me in the butt because now I'm up late tonight lol.

But yeah, I think pregnancy can make you tired no matter what trimester you are in. I don't know how much sleep a pregnant women needs exactly. Perhaps you should talk to your doctor at your next appt and let him or her know that you are sleeping 16 hours a day and see if it's normal for you. It seems like a lot to me.

  • I'm just thinking how nice it must be to be able to sleep as much as you want, whenever you want.  Jealous!  One time I was so tired in 1st Tri that my toddler was crawling all over me for about an hour and I slept through all of it.  I woke up covered in toys.

  • I still have sleepy days, but I've noticed a trend that I am usually sleepy on the days I know I haven't had enough water.  If I drink a bunch of water, it wakes me up and I feel energized again.  Just my experience....

  • I am sleeping 12 hours a day...14 when I take an afternoon/early evening nap! I can't function without at least 11 of those hours!
  • I am exhausted still for the most part but I can't fall asleep until late at night. Then I have to be up at 5:30am for work everyday. I have to get up and walk around so I don't fall asleep at my desk!

I had extreme fatigue around 24 weeks for a few days but then it went away.  It felt just like first trimester fatigue.  Some hormone surge?  Who knows ...

  • I am so with you! I've found that it helps to spread out my eating a bit, getting in my calories more evenly throughout the day. I sleep about 8hrs at night (well, I have to get up to go to the bathroom and once or twice to take care of kids!) and then try to nap for a little over an hour in the afternoon while kids are napping. Hope you feel better and get some more energy!

I'm sure you've had your iron levels checked, right?  With DS2, my iron was low for the first tri blood work, so I started taking SlowFE.  Then when I was tested again (I forget what week) it was still low so I had to take 2 supplements a day. Just something to think about b/c that can really, really make you feel sluggish.

  • people kept telling me that after my 1st trimister the sleepiness will go away. Negative..lol the only difference is I don't take naps on my lunch break I go home after nap and then wake up to do chores around the house and then go to bed early. So the sleepiness is still there.
